With spring fast approaching and the sun brighter, I find my attention drawn
to the windows in my house. I would love to reglaze every one so we could
enjoy all of the benefits that new glass would bring. obviously, glass that
helps to keep the house warm would be great, but I have a particular yearning
for the self-cleaning option. I realise that it would still need an occasional
polish with a cloth, but every little helps.
No matter how sparkling your windows are, the view is always improved
by how they are dressed. Whether you have curtains, blinds or shutters, or a combination, the
look needs to be appropriate to the space. If you are struggling to decide which style of window
treatment would suit your rooms, not only can you can take inspiration from our five beautiful
houses, but also from our special feature on shutters and blinds (page 103), which offers more creative
suggestions for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. If, however, curtains are your thing, our
decorating team has spoilt us with some wonderful finishing touches (page 106), from fancy linings
and eye-catching borders to contemporary tie-backs.
This month, we are also bringing you two impressive but very distinct gardens. I am especially
captivated by what I have called the garden of two halves (page 72), which artfully combines older
cottage-style planting with new geometric designs and flowing informality. For a more urban-inspired

enviable verdant feel to city living.
