Feeling Inspired
n a previous lifetime, before joining
Modern Athlete,
I worked on several other sport publications that
focused more on ‘how-to’ articles, such as run your
best half marathon, ride to your full potential, use these
simple tricks to become a better athlete, and the like.
There will always be a place for that type of content,
and we do carry some of it here, but I am much happier
working on a mag that focuses on inspiration, mostly in
the form of great ‘people stories.’
In fact, the first time I picked up a copy of this mag in
August 2009, the first thing I said was “Yes, please,
now that’s where I want to work!” So that same day I
contacted the Publisher, Mike Bray, and two days later
I was flying to Joburg for a job interview. The rest is
history, and this mag has come a long way since then,
but one thing has not changed in the subsequent five
years: The mag is still built around inspiring people
stories – and the real bonus from my perspective is that
I get to meet and interview many of these inspiring
athletes.
I

how hard it is to cut down a great interview to just 700
words?)
Another privilege this month was attending the Cape
Town launch of
Bobby de la Motte’s
book,
Runaway
Comrade.
Not only did I get to meet Bobby, who I had
only ever corresponded with via e-mail from Australia,
but also attending the launch was one of the all-time
greatest SA athletes,
Johnny Halberstadt,
who flew in
from the USA especially for the launch of his friend’s
book. The first thing he said to me – even before hello
– was “I love what you’re doing with the mag, full
of stories about people, past and present. It’s a great
inspirational read!” Bobby then proceeded to quote some
of the inspirational stories we’ve run in the mag when he
was talking about keeping up with developments in SA
running while living in Aus.
Taking the Plunge
The point is that inspirational stories help motivate us
to run, walk, ride, swim and more, and the content of
this mag even rubs off on me: After my interview with
obstacle racing star Dominique De Oliveira last month,
I was inspired to give obstacle racing a try myself – read
about it on page 42. And I hope you find a similarly
inspiring story in this month’s edition, one that also
makes you want to get moving.
This Month’s Inspiration
Looking back at the last few weeks, for example, I sat
down for a chat over coffee with cover girl and Olympic
marathoner
Tanith Maxwell,
and then had lunch with
double Commonwealth triathlon medallist
Richard
Murray.
I also had really enjoyable telephonic chats
with trail star
Iain Don-Wauchope
as well as avid
walker and High Court Judge
Jean Nepgen.
All four
have such great stories to tell, and I just wish we had
more space in the mag to use all the great material that
Sean Falconer
