Well who could believe that we have managed to hurtle through 2014 as though it
was just a handful of months, but sure enough, it will be gone within weeks and we’ll be
into 2015. Amazing! Still, if it is true that “Time flies when you’re having fun”, then Boy
I must be having an absolute blast through the year, which I would probably appreciate
more if I had time to stop long enough to think about it.
This made me stop for a minute to reflect on just what sort of year I have had and
I have to say that it has actually been a pretty good one in many respects. There have
been visits overseas for a variety of vintage aviation reasons, a highlight there being a trip
to Papua New Guinea to view some of the few remaining WW-II wrecks. Elsewhere I
avoided packing any containers this year as our hangar is pretty full so shipping aeroplanes
from far away places will have to be put on hold for a spell.
That leads me to CW aeroplane population which grew by one aircraft when our
Fokker Triplane was completed mid year. The sterling efforts of John Evans with Dave
Simms, and with help from myself and the guys from JEM Aviation, have produced a
very fine example of Reinhold Platz’ most famous design. To then have the opportunity
to finally fly one of these legendary fighting scouts was a huge bonus that I can only be
grateful for and which I will wax lyrical about soon in the pages of CW.
A great privilege came in April when we were able to host their Royal Highnesses
the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. William
and Kate clearly enjoyed their tour through the museum with Sir Peter Jackson whilst I
thoroughly enjoyed hosting them on the outside tour of some of the range of machines
based at the field. This Royal visit provided wonderful exposure for the museum and for
heritage aviation in general and there is no doubt that this publicity contributed to the
boost in visits the museum enjoyed through the winter season.
And of course it was our 20th birthday this year so we have had much to celebrate.
During the course of the year we launched our popular digital edition, and ran a couple
of special subs promotions. A lot of work that has taken place in the CW offices this year
however, has actually been all about next year. We are deeply involved in the planning for
next year’s Classic Fighters Airshow here at Omaka. This is shaping up to be a significant
event and way bigger than we ever planned when running the first one back in 2001. As
always, we are trying a few ‘different’ things in aerial entertainment, whilst containing all
the favourite things that have appeared in shows at Omaka the past, some of them unique!
This is going to get busier leading up to Easter so please be patient if you’re trying to
get sense out of the CW office. It’s only for a few months after which - we’ll see you at the
show! Remember too to stay for a week if you can - there’s much to do in Marlborough!
In the meantime, take care on the roads and in the air through the festive season.
