Instructor Preparation
Introduction
This section is a compilation of notes by the course developer. It is designed to help you
deliver the IBM Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition 3.7 Fundamentals course. It gives:
An overview of the course
Instructions for setting up the classroom
Other information that instructors should have to make the class a success

Classroom Setup Instructions
Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition can be installed on a variety of operating systems and
hardware platforms. However, this course is designed to be taught with the software
installed on a UNIX or Linux platform.

Instructor Preparation
Instructor Server
During the class, the instructor will need to install the software on a server at the same the
students are doing it. By doing this at the same time as the students, it will help to keep the
students progressing together. The instructor server will need to run the following
programs:
Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus 7.1 or later version
Tivoli Netcool Security Manager
Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition 3.7
Tivoli Netcool Common License Manager
Running a License Server
Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus 7.1 requires licenses to be served by a Tivoli Netcool Common
License Manager. It is not necessary to put a license manager on each server. You only need
to run the license manager on the instructor server.
Instructor Workstation
Ideally, the instructor will have a Windows or Linux workstation used to:
Show course slides (using a projector hooked to the instructor workstation)
Access the instructor or student servers
If you use a Windows workstation, it should be:
Equipped with an X11 server to which you can forward the thick-client GUI for
the installation and
ncp_userconfig.
Equipped with a SecureCRT or some other Telnet tool.
Previously used with Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition GUIs to ensure you
have the proper version of Java loaded on your workstation (1.5x preferred).
Before starting software install routines, you will need to redirect the display on the server
to your workstation. You will use a command like this example (if you are using the bash
shell):
export DISPLAY=workstation_ip_address:0.0

Instructor Preparation
A projector connected to the instructor’s workstation should be capable of displaying at a
resolution of 1024 x 768.
Student Servers
All student servers need to look for the license files on the instructor’s server. This requires
you to set the following environment variable on each student workstation.
NETCOOL_LICENSE_FILE=27000@instructor_servername
Each student server will also require an entry in its
/etc/hosts
file for the instructor server.
Each student server will be required to run the following programs:
Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus 7.1 or later version
Tivoli Netcool Security Manager
Tivoli Network Manager IP Edition 3.7
Each student server should have a Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus ObjectServer already installed
and running before class commences. In Unit 2, you will lead the students through
installing the Security Manager and Tivoli Network Manager.
Follow the instructions in the
Classroom Setup Guide
on the Instructor Resource CD on
setting up the machines for the student exercises.
Timing Guidelines
Reasonable target times for pacing the course are shown in the following table. Actual
instruction time is dependent upon a variety of factors including the skill level of the
instructor and the skill level and technical background of the students. The times shown are
estimated completion times, and not start times. This suggested schedule is based on a
starting time each day of 8:00 a.m.
