ith our next issue (Feb/Mar 2016) we’ll be celebrating
five years of publishing H2Open Magazine and following
events in the world of open water swimming. When we
published our first issue in January 2011 people asked us
what would we put in our second issue. If you see open water swimming as
just the first (and shortest) part of a triathlon you can understand how these
people thought we’d run out of things to write. Some were even surprised
we’d managed to fill a single issue.
Fortunately, open water swimming offers a lot more options than a quick
neoprene-clad dash around some buoys to your bicycle. Not only is there an
almost unlimited number of swims you can do, the sport is rich in fascinating
stories from amazing people. It’s often the case that we have to make

difficult decisions on what to leave out rather than struggle to fill our pages.

It’s been a privilege to observe and sometimes be part of the changes and
developments in the sport over the last five years. We’ve seen the creation of
exciting new events, small events becoming big events and, sadly, some events disappear. We’ve watched,
and joined in (not always willingly), as winter swimming has become increasingly popular and we love how
the options for swimming holidays and swimming related travel have multiplied many times.
We couldn’t be here without our readers, who in some cases are also our contributors, content
advisers and marketing support team, and we truly appreciate your support. We know some of you have
been reading since our first issue and we hope you will stick around for the next five (at least!). From our
side, we will continue to try to produce original, entertaining and useful content to help you make the
most of the water.
Meanwhile, enjoy our Christmas issue, have a great festive break and set yourself some exciting
