Century…
In the first decade of our gleaming new century the
term ‘design classic’ is frequently used to describe
outstanding pieces of functional art, be they items
of furniture, cars, buildings, kitchen implements,
clothes… even shoes. It refers, of course, to any
object – frequently ‘retro’ in appearance – that is
elegant and timeless in design, and which is likely
never to be surpassed in terms of sophisticated
style and pleasing lines.
The phrase is not the exclusive property of the real
world, however, as the subjects of this book ably
demonstrate. Each of the models featured within
these pages is a design classic; each being either a
replica of one of the fictional craft featured in Gerry
Anderson’s puppet and live-action series of the
60s
and
70s, or an original design inspired by one of
those series. Such was the impact on young, creative
minds of the then-futuristic and speculative 21
st
.
century hardware depicted in Gerry’s programmes
when initially broadcast that, some forty-plus years
after FX legends Derek Meddings’ and Mike Trim’s
designs first rocketed, flew, trundled or cruised
across our TV screens, they remain the only choice
of scratchbuilding subject for many genre model
makers around the world.
Within this book, and in intricate detail, you will find
words and images that chronicle precisely how
some of the world’s most accomplished science
fiction modellers with a particular fondness for
Anderson subjects set about recreating their
favourite craft from cult shows such as
Fireball
XL5, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet
and
Space:
1999.

technology and engineering could and did make
anything and everything possible - a time in which
fantastic craft were not only fabulous, functional and
fast, they were each a design classic.
