Sometimes our world feels a long way away. Unless you’re one of those blessed people
who can see mountains from their window (‘swines’, as I call them), hillwalking
can be a remote pleasure: something distant, almost hypothetical. You get your x
however you can – preening kit, scrambling over maps, reading splendid magazines –
but sometimes it can feel that your hobby is 80 per cent homework. But that’s okay.
It lends every trip to the hills an air of occasion. There’s an old saying about absence,
the heart, growing and fondness (I forget the exact words) – and it’s true.
The thing that made me think about this is that chap up on that space station.
Tim Peake is up there now, oating about, listening to David Bowie, doing the
spaceman thing. But he’s been training for this for most of his career, the last
seven years intensively,
without
going into space. Imagine that! That’s got to take
some kind of dedication, right? So why does he stay interested? Because being an
astronaut is worth it. Climbing mountains is worth it. And you can get in a car
from almost anywhere in the UK and be at the foot of any mountain of choice
in – at most – a day. That’s what this issue is dedicated to: seizing a
moment, and giving the mountains a go. And hopefully you’ll nd
something for you in these pages. Apparently Tim Peake likes climbing
mountains. Do you know how many of them that swine can see from
his window?
All

None of them. That’s irony for you. And I say again, imagine that.
