would just like
to offer my thanks to
all those well-wishers,
contributors,
organisers, old friends
and colleagues from
the industry who
made our recent trip
to the US Nationals in
Columbus another
memorable
experience. Having
missed last year’s
event it was nice to
come back on a wave
and I am very happy
to be able to report
plans are now in place that will improve our
US distribution, and reduce both the point of
sale cost and the time it takes copies to arrive
stateside each month. We have already
improved our international approach to
product coverage and this is an ongoing
process and one we regard as very important.
Our readership is increasing dramatically on
both sides of the Atlantic and we recognise
that the world is a smaller place now –
something I plan to reflect in our contents as
well.
This issue we are pleased to present the
usual wide cross section of modelling and
reference material kicking off with Ken
Duffey’s authoritative take on the Trumpeter J-
15. Forgotten Few has been carried over for
this month to make room for Tony O’Toole’s in
depth look at the use of Stirling Target Tugs
during
Operation Market Garden,
while Dave
Hooper’s AEG G.IV covers all aspects of World
War I modelling with his customary panache. I
was very pleased to receive the Jaguar piece
from Peter Doyle just in time for inclusion. This
ticks all the boxes for me, with an expert take
on a new kit offering constructive criticism
and advice and does everything I would
expect a kit review to do, so I was happy to
squeeze it in at the last moment.
My own efforts have wandered from scale
to scale this month, with ICM’s C-45 being
built against the clock and the recipient of
some timely after market products, but
various bits of 1/72 have been lingering on
the bench as well, of which more in due
course. The US trip rather ate into my
modelling time this month but I hope to
present some more forays into The
Gentleman’s Scale in future issues.
In the interests of filling pages 34 – 37, for
now I had better stop talking and start
modelling. I hope you enjoy this issue. Please
continue to let us know your thoughts, and
welcome aboard to all those new readers who
signed up for subscriptions in Columbus.

carrier was launched on 4th December
1988 at the Nikolayev shipyard in the
Ukraine and christened Riga. She was renamed
Varyag in 1990 and following the breakup of the
Soviet Union, ownership was transferred to
Ukraine and the uncompleted vessel was laid up.
After some protracted negotiations the stripped
down hulk was purchased by the People’s
Republic of China in 1998, ostensibly to be used
as a floating hotel and casino based in Macau.
When that deal fell through, the vessel was
towed around the Cape of Good Hope to the
Dalian shipyard in north east China where she
was completely rebuilt and emerged as a fully
working aircraft carrier named Liaoning after the
province in which she resided.
She began sea trials on 10th August 2011,
supposedly as a Scientific Research, Experiment
and Training vessel with the Chinese Navy.
Having built the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker land
based fighter under licence as the Su-27SK,
China developed an improved unlicensed copy
as the J-11B, fitted with a home-grown engine
and radar. China then approached Sukhoi with a
request to purchase the carrier based Su-33
Flanker variant for use on the Liaoning. Sukhoi
replied positively along the lines of ‘How many
do you want?' but when China replied with 'Just
the one airframe', Sukhoi and the Russians
quickly said no!
Undeterred China purchased an early
development Su-33 airframe from Ukraine and
this has now emerged as a reverse engineered
copy by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation as
the J-15 Flying Shark.
A number of photographs can be found on
the Internet showing primer painted
development airframes numbered 551 to 556,
with 554 and 555 adopting an all over light grey
camouflage colour. There are also photographs
of operational J-15s in the same overall grey but
with squadron codes (104, 105 and 108 seen so
far) and PLANAF flags on the sides.
The Kit
This Shenyang J-15 from Trumpeter is a brand
new moulding and has no connection to their
previously released range of Flankers in 1/72. The
kit arrives in a large strong cardboard box that is
much bigger than the airframe itself to cater for
the large 41cm x 27cm (16in x 10.5in) flight deck,
complete with raised jet blast deflector and deck
crew. The box lid has a dramatic painting of a
development J-15 about to launch into a stormy
sky.
Aside from the flight deck, which completely
fills the bottom of the box, there are lots of poly
bags of tightly packed sprues moulded in mid
grey plastic, two very large decal sheets, a clear
sprue and an etched brass fret. Panel detail is
delicately engraved, although there are a few
moulding pips to remove.
The fuselage is split horizontally and is
moulded complete with the inner, non folding
wing sections. Trumpeter have corrected the
Wings with all trailing edges removed – the right wing has the
wing tip launch rail and joining section added. The parts are
shown next to the left wing
Although shown on the instruction sheet the Sorbtsya ECM pod
(part Q10) is not present in this release of the kit

flight deck although it is missing the red stripe
shown on the coloured markings diagram.
The etched brass fret contains four grilles for
the sides of the intakes (kudos to Trumpeter for
spotting that they are different on the Su-33),
although why they couldn't be moulded into the
intakes sides is a mystery. Also on the fret are
four tiny slats for the anti FOD guard on the nose
wheel plus some aerials and angle of attack
vanes. One minor mistake that I spotted is that
the real aircraft has two retractable spotlights
that illuminate the IFR probe when tanking. The
one on the port side below the cockpit is present
on Trumpeter's kit, but the light on the starboard
side is missed off completely.
Outer wings and dorsal air brake attached
angled main wheel wells found on their previous
Flanker kits and provide the marginally bigger
wings, with the double slotted flaps of the Su-33.
Two sets of outer wing panels are provided, as
are two sets of horizontal tailplanes to cater for
the folded/non folded options and there is a
generous selection of weapons included,
although I couldn't find any genuine photos of J-
15s carrying weapons at this early stage in its
testing.
The clear sprue contains a windscreen and
canopy, with a slight mould seam down the
centreline due to the slide mould used to
produce it. Also on the clear sprue are the
landing/taxi lights for the nose wheel leg plus
two styles of HUD; one for the J-15, and the
other, older style, for the future Su-33 release.
The final plastic parts are the huge flight deck
with a blast deflector, its recess, the actuating
arms and the hold back restraints, plus three
figures; a pilot and two deck crew.
The two large decal sheets are well printed,
the first one consisting of markings for no less
than six J-15s, four in yellow primer and two in all
over grey . All the options have prominent
circular photo theodolite markings with 554 also
having the Flying Shark logo on the outer fins
and below the cockpit.
The second decal sheet has markings for the
chaff/flare dispensers on either side of the tail
boom.
Ignoring Trumpeter's painting guide, I painted
the pilot with an orange immersion suit guided
by a photo found on the Internet. I also fitted
him into the cockpit at this stage (not shown on
Trumpeter's instructions) as you cannot get his
legs under the instrument panel if you try to fit
him later.
With the cockpit installed into the upper
fuselage part, the upper and lower fuselage
halves can be joined together. At this point, on
all my Flanker models, I paint the titanium
coloured engine nacelles – I find it easier to do
this before the fins are fitted. After roughly
masking the rest of the airframe I use an aerosol
can of Humbrol Metalcote Polished Steel to
cover the engine area, and when the paint is dry
I mask off sections of the nacelle and buff with a
cotton bud to get the heat stripes on one
section. I then leave the rear section unbuffed in
a dull metallic finish. I then use a silver pencil to
highlight the various square access panels. After
a spray of satin varnish, the painted nacelles are
then carefully masked off and building

The exhaust nozzles get the same treatment,
but with the addition of some blue powder on
the forward section from a Tamiya weathering
set. My method isn't as complicated as the multi

The cockpit is made up from a tub, a two part
K-36 ejection seat, a control column and an
instrument panel. The seat is adequate if the
pilot is fitted and the canopy closed but I would
replace it with a resin item otherwise. There is
raised instrument detail on the front and side
panels and a decal provided for the front panel,
but the instruction sheet also shows decals for
the side consoles. I decided to apply the front
panel decal. The decals for the side consoles are
just black squares, so I painted the raised detail
instead. I later discovered that these decals aren't
for the side consoles at all but are for the
Windscreen and canopy attached, while the pilot consults his
map
