Steel wheels deliver holiday cheer

G
etting an electric train was, hands down, the best Christ-
mas gift I received as a child – and I suspect many of
you would say the same. Or possibly your parents set up
a seasonal train layout. How many hours did you spend
watching that train go ’round and ’round?
No doubt about it, trains and holidays
go together like egg and nog, so it’s only
natural
Classic Toy Trains
devotes space in
each December issue to reliving those great
memories of the past and showcasing ways
to make electric trains a special part of this
year’s celebrations.
For example, Gordon Gebert talks about
the Lionel outfit he played with in the late
1940s. As a 7-year-old child actor, Gordon
portrayed the son of Janet Leigh in
Holiday
Affair,
a film released at Christmas 1949.
Movie buffs will recall how a Lionel set,
with passenger cars custom lettered as
Red
Rocket Express,
played a key role in the plot. Gordon, lucky boy,
got to play with a train that was never available to the public. You
can read his story in “The boy who got the finest Lionel set of
1949,” starting on page 42.
In “Dreaming of a snow-covered layout” (page 38), Ronnie
Tong shares his tips for building a 4 x 9-foot O gauge display to
share his love of trains with family and visitors. This compact
layout offers an amazing variety of frosty scenes.
As Ronnie tells CTT’s Roger Carp, “My layout serves, above
all, as a way for me to express my vision of the world, or at least
how I’d like the world to be. I’ve always dreamed of building a
place where trains were the centerpiece and
yet movement was everywhere.”
When you see his railroad, you’ll agree
Ronnie has succeeded brilliantly.
Lionel train sets were nearly impossible
to find in 1945, but Tony Koester’s father
found a way to make the holiday memora-
ble for his train-crazy 3-year-old. In “The
boy had to have his Christmas” on page 46,
Tony, a long-time contributor to our sister
magazine
Model Railroader,
shares the mov-
ing story behind his very first electric train.
Of course, this issue also dishes up our
regular menu of reviews, new product
releases, reader photos, and how-to articles.
