Despite the fact that many in the Army would have preferred a tracked
amphibious cargo carrier to support armoured battle groups during the sixties
and seventies, the six-wheel Alvis Stalwart proved formidable at tackling
rough terrain. The first production order was placed in 1962, with the
first deliveries being made in 1963 – although the British Army of
the Rhine (BAOR) had to wait until early 1965 for them to arrive.

swimming abilities – indeed one
soldier was court martialled for
attempting to make his way
across the channel in one!
