I live in a poor part of town. There are a lot of gangs here and it isn’t safe even in the daytime. That’s why I always carry a knife. I’ve never used it. I don’t have to. When I show it to people, they leave me alone. They don’t attack me.

I had a very nice job and lived with my family in a big house. Then, I left my wife and moved in with another woman. My wife kept our house and, when I split up with my new girlfriend, I suddenly realised I had nowhere to live. I usually stay with friends but sometimes I have to sleep on the street.

There is a lot of homelessness in our area. I remember when I left home and first came to London it took a while to find a flat. I was lucky because I knew people who I could stay with. Things are more difficult for young people now and that’s why I help out three times a week giving food to people who live on the streets.

I was walking home last week when someone hit me for no reason. He didn’t steal anything and, luckily, didn’t use a weapon but it was still a shock. Now, when it’s dark, if I’m at a friend’s house, I always stay for the night because I’m scared to go home alone. I sleep on people’s sofas so often that they joke and call me ‘Homeless Harry’ now.
