Win98 Installation What is the procedure for installing Win98 on VIA chipset based systems? General Chipset FAQ Q: What is the difference between the 586A and 586B southbridge chip? A: The only difference is the 586B supports ACPI (power mangement) and the 586A doesn't. Q: Who manufacturers dual CPU VIA chipset based boards? A: At present no motherboard manufacturers are producing dual CPU VIA chipset based motherboards. The reason they gave was that there just isn't enough market demand to justify producing such a board. Q: How much DRAM can my VIA chipset Cache? (Cacheable Area) A: Check the table for the cachable area of your VIA based motherboard. The VPX, Apollo VP, and all earlier VIA chipsets don't support ECC. IDE Busmaster Driver FAQ Q: My system uses Win98 so should I install the VIA bus master & AGP drivers? A: Microsoft has bundled full support for VIA chipsets into Win98 therefore it isn't neccessary to install the VIA bus master driver but VIA suggests installing the VIA AGP driver and IrQ routing miniport driver. Check out the Win98 FAQ for Win 98 installation procedures with VIA chipsets. Q: My system uses Win95/NT so should I install the VIA bus master driver? A: The main function of an IDE busmaster driver is to allow your system to take advantage of the IDE and UltraDMA capabilities of your Hard-drive, of course you have to have an UltraDMA-capable harddrive. If your system is running Windows 95 OSR2, there is no reason to install the VIA driver because OSR2 supports both IDE and UltraDMA capibilities. If your system isn't running an OSR2 version of Win95 then you may want to install the VIA driver to take advantage of the IDE and UltraDMA features of your harddrive. Q: Which VIA Chipsets are compatible with the VIA IDE busmaster driver? A: The VIA IDE busmaster driver can be installed with the VP-1, VPX, VP2, VP3, and MVP3 chipsets. Check our product page if you are unsure which chipset you have. VIA's older chipsets do not support IDE busmastering so cannot take advantage of the IDE busmaster driver. For Chipsets such as the 570 or 496, we suggest you use the standard Windows driver as VIA no longer writes drivers for these now obsolete chipsets. Q: Where can I download the latest VIA drivers? As these devices are fairly new to the market, adding support takes some time. VIA suggests uninstalling the VIA IDE busmaster driver and using the Windows standard default driver. An upgrade to Win95 OSR2 or Win98 is advised to take advantage of IDE and UDMA tranfers. AGP FAQ Q: What AGP cards are compatible with VIA chipsets? A: Checkout the VIA AGP card compatibility guide for a full list. Q: Does VIA have an AGP driver that supports Win NT4.0? A: No because Win NT4.0 does not support AGP. AGP requires support for Direct X instructions and Microsoft will only add this support into Win NT5.0. An AGP card will still run on NT4.0 but only in 2D mode. Q: Can my VP3 based motherboard run AGP 2X mode? A: Some users have reported that running AGP 2X mode with the VP3 causes their system to run unstable so for stability reasons VIA suggests running 1X mode. Q: Can my MVP3 based motherboard run AGP 2X mode? A: Yes the MVP3 can run 2X mode. The MVP3 AGP bus meets the stringent industry standard AGP v1.0 specifications. Q: Is my MVP3 based motherboard compatible with the Intel 740 graphics chipset? A: Yes, the MVP3 is compatible with the Intel 740 graphics chipset. You need to download the latest VIA AGP driver ver.2.6 or later. VIA also suggest using the latest Intel 740 driver ver.1.5 or later.
