Dear Reader
After almost 30 years out of the limelight, a true, worldwide
celebrity returned to the public eye amid huge fanfare and
spectacular media attention. A globetrotting promotional tour
ensued, attracting thousands of spectators eager to catch a glimpse
of a legend (no flash photography please). This all led up to a solo
comeback show in front of a packed venue with millions more
watching or listening around the world. Then, after a two-minute
performance, which raised a staggering $9.5m, it was all over and
our celebrity was quietly escorted to an unknown location—not to
be seen again for who knows how long.
It may sound like the comeback tour of a ’60s rock legend who
has decided to once again don wig and snake-print jeans and
prance around in front of adoring fans, but, as I’m sure you know,
it isn’t. I am of course talking about the British Guiana 1c. Black
on Magenta, which made a much more dignified return to the
spotlight when it took centre stage in New York as the biggest, and
sole, attraction in Sotheby’s much-anticipated auction on 17 June
(see this month’s ‘Newsdesk’). Although it didn’t quite achieve
the $10m lower estimate afforded to it by Sotheby’s—the hammer
falling at $7.9m before the buyer’s premiums bumped the total
sale price up to $9.5m—this legend of the philatelic world
certainly did enough to reaffirm its place as the most expensive
stamp ever to be sold at auction—and by a long way.
At the time of writing, all that is known about the successful
bidder is that he, she or they were on the other end of a telephone
line. Has the British Guiana 1c. Black on Magenta gone into a
collection, or was it bought as an investment piece, destined to sit

isolated in a vault somewhere, never to be seen again until called
upon to ‘perform’ at auction again?
One thing that is certain is that whoever owns it now has earned
the right, if they so choose, to be added to a very exclusive list of
former owners whose names are now etched into the fascinating
history of this legendary stamp.
We can only hope that the new owner, whoever it may be, will
allow this star of the stamp world to shine in public again soon. If
not, we may have to wait another 30 years or more before it rocks
the world again
.
