One of the recurring saying that you will hear around the offices
here at
GSM
is ‘Knowledge is power’. The ability to be aware
of, and spot, minute detail in a stamp that differentiates a run-
of-the-mill page filler from a philatelic rarity worth a thousand
times its values, or more, is a knowledge philatelists are constantly
developing through years of dedicated study.
It’s this keen eye for detail that separates those involved in the
world of stamps from the majority of the general public—which
is probably why it took a philatelist to discover one of the most
notorious stamp frauds to ever threaten the Australian Post
Office. In his latest article for
GSM,
found in this month's issue,
Richard Breckon explains how a keen-eyed philatelist uncovered
the 1932 2d. King George V and the 2d. Sydney Harbour Bridge
forgeries, which went undetected, even by postal authorities,
for a considerable time. In this case it was knowledge that led to
the discovery of the first stamp forgeries made to defraud the
post office—and the subsequent arrest and imprisonment of the
perpetrators. Of course, it also led to the discovery of a highly-
desirable philatelic curiosity and a fascinating story, the details of
which are described by Richard on page 60.
I hope you enjoy this and the other articles and features in this
month’s issue.
It’s a skill well worth having, especially if it means you can grab a
bargain in a club packet, auction or from a dealer too busy to check
the finer detail. Every collector, armed with the right knowledge, is
on the look-out for such finds and I’m sure many will have lots of
interesting tales of when a trained-eye has reaped its rewards—and we
would love to hear them here at
GSM.
The thrill of finding a treasure that has probably been overlooked
countless times in its history is reward enough, but the idea that
you could have saved quite a sum of money, thanks to a little bit of
knowledge, also helps with the feel-good factor.
Of course, it can also work the other way. The power of
knowledge can also stop you from making an unwise purchase.
On the day of writing this editorial a colleague in the office was
recounting a recent event in which a reputable auction house
was offering what it thought was a true, highly-documented rarity,
or at least that was how it was described by its vendor. However,
to the trained eye it was nothing more than an interesting,
but, nonetheless, considerably less valuable variety. Luckily
the auctioneer was saved from a red face thanks to a timely
intervention from the said colleague, but you have to feel for
the vendor who, I assume, thought what he had was the genuine
article.
