Letter from the chief
Dear Collector,
It is almost half-way through the year and summer is finally here. We are very excited about
the remaining issues in the 2014 stamp programme. During the past few months, we have
been busy working on building a new website. As we write, this site is scheduled to be
launched shortly. We trust that you will find the new site an easier, simpler tool which will
help to make UNPA stamp collecting an enjoyable hobby.
This coming July we will continue the very popular World Heritage Series with UNESCO.
The subject this year is the Taj Mahal. We will release six stamps and three prestige
booklets. Our head graphics designer Rorie Katz has outdone herself with this issue. The
Taj Mahal is one of the wonders of the world. Looking at these beautiful images, the rich
colours and the intricate designs, one can see why the Taj Mahal is known as a symbol of
love. We are very pleased with the work and I’m sure you will be as well.
Last November the United Nations designated 2014 as the International Year of Family
Farming (IYFF). Later in the summer we are issuing six stamps on this theme. We selected
the title of Cultivating Hope to embrace the important message, which is to ensure that
family farming encourages sustainable development.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION—THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
UNITED NATIONS STAMPS USED FOR MAILING
United Nations stamps in United States denominations are valid for
postage only if mailed at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Stamps in Swiss franc denominations are valid for postage only if
mailed at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. Stamps in
euro denominations are valid for postage only if mailed at the Vienna
International Centre, Austria.
PRICES
Stamps are sold at face value. UN/Geneva and UN/Vienna stamps
are sold at US equivalent rates, rounded up to the nearest cent. The
US equivalents of the euro and Swiss franc denomination stamps are
subject to fluctuating exchange rates.
SALES AND EXCHANGES
Every effort is made to provide UNPA customers with material of the
highest philatelic quality. Therefore, all sales are final and no exchange
or refund will be made except where stamps are received in damaged
condition.
HANDLING FEES
Due to the increase in processing costs, effective 15 July  2014 there
will be a change in UNPA’s postage and handling charges. UNPA has
maintained the same prices for postage and handling since May 2003
and, unfortunately, an increase is unavoidable.
Therefore, the new handling and postage charge is Euro 3,00 (F.s. 4,00).
For semi-annual and annual deliveries the charge is Euro 5,00 (F.s. 6,00).
Please let us know if you wish to change the method of delivery of your
standing orders and in the meantime, thank you for your continued
interest in collecting United Nations stamps.
REGISTRATION THRESHOLD
UNPA will change the registration threshold amount effective 15
July  2014. Orders valued at $200.00 and above are automatically
registered.
WHEN ORDERING BY MAIL
The item numbers used in this issue of
Fascination
identify the products
and should be written on the order form in the Item Number column.
The next column asks for a description of each item as a cross-reference.
In this space, you may also indicate any specific requests, e.g., special
marginal inscription (M.I.) positions. Fill in the price in the appropriate
column. Multiply the price by the number required of that particular
item and enter the resulting figure in the Amount column on the order
form. Total your order and indicate whether registration of the order is
requested. Add postage and handling charges. Enclose your remittance
and mail to the indicated address.
The new-issue stamps, stationery and other philatelic items have been
pre-printed on the order form for your convenience.

UNPA Sales Counter and Personalized Stamp Shop
Access to UN Stamps New York Shop
As part of the renovation project for the General Assembly Building
at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UN Stamps Shop
has been relocated to a temporary Visitor’s Centre in the Dag
Hammarskjöld Library on the south end of the campus. Due to
security limitations, visitors are not allowed into the Centre without
prior notice of arrival. To schedule a visit to the UNPA Stamp Shop,
or to see if access has changed, please call 1 212 963 7698 or toll-
free 1-800-234-UNPA (8672) for instructions. A picture ID will be
required for entry.
The renovated UN Stamps Shop will reopen to unannounced visitors
in the fall of 2014.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as the iconic
General Assembly Building is rejuvenated.

eritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Cultural heritage and
natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is
its universal application. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they
are located. For this year’s World Heritage stamp series, UNPA has chosen to feature the Taj Majal in India.
The Taj Mahal, located in the Agra District in Uttar Pradesh, India is widely recognized as “the jewel of Muslim art in India” and is considered one
of the most universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.
In 1631 Shah Jahan, Emperor during the Mughal empire’s period of greatest prosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal,
a Persian princess, died during the birth of their 14th child.  The court chronicles of Shah Jahan’s grief illustrate the love story traditionally held
as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. Construction of the complex began in 1632.The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding
buildings and garden were finished five years later.
For its construction an international team of several thousands of masons, stone-cutters, marble workers, mosaicists, painters, calligraphers,
dome builders and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire and also from the Central Asia and Iran. They worked under
the orders of the Ustad-Ahmad Lahori, who was the main architect of the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is regarded by many as the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Islamic, Persian, Ottoman
Turkish and Indian architectural styles. The tomb is the central focus of the entire complex. This large, white marble structure stands on a square
platform and consists of a symmetrical building with an arch-shaped doorway topped by a large dome and finial. The main chamber houses the
false tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan - the actual graves are at a lower level.
The marble dome that surmounts the tomb is the most spectacular feature. Its height of around 35 metres is about the same as the base of the
building. The top of the dome is decorated with a lotus design, which also serves to accentuate its height. The shape of the dome is emphasized
by four smaller domes placed at its corners, which replicate the onion shape of the main dome. The dome is topped by a gilded finial, which mixes
traditional Persian and Hindustani decorative elements. At the corners of the base are four minarets, which are each more than 40 metres tall.
The exterior and interior decorations of the Taj Mahal are among the finest to be found in Mughal architecture of any period. Throughout the
complex, passages from the Qur’an are used as decorative elements.
The Taj Mahal was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. This remarkable structure’s enduring aesthetic quality represents a timeless
testimony to the love of Jahan for his beloved wife.
