How to color type in three easy steps
Responding to our
Design Talk
post about the LiebeDoni typeface, reader
Jackie Ponderosa asked what tool or feature we used to color in the fonts to
create the stained-glass look. It’s easy in InDesign:
To color,
set your type, select its text frame,
then go to
Type > Create Outlines,
which
changes the font into a static drawing:

LiebeDoni
is a straightforward hand-rendering of Bodoni Black, but without Bodoni’s
filets, which are the curved fills that join stem to serif (below, left). It comes in a solid
version and a rather entertaining outlined version (above). The fun is in its more than
600 glyphs, which are alternate characters, swashes (above) and ligatures (below).

Object > Paths > Release Compound:
Click on each filled shape, then color:
