Microchip has announced the PIC24F GB2
family, an extension of its eXtreme Low Power
(XLP) PIC

CUI Inc., has released a new AC-DC power-
supply family targeting applications that
demand 100% up-time. Available in 75W,
100W and 155W versions, the PSF series
includes built-in battery-charging and back-
up functionality.  
Under normal operating conditions, the
units are able to charge a stand-by battery
and also supply direct power to the load. In
the event of AC power failure, the PSF
series automatically switches to DC power
from the battery source to ensure
continuous operation of the system.

The ATECC108A features Elliptic Curve
Cryptography (ECC), a security technology
which has the advantage of offering stronger
protection than prior algorithms using the same
key length. It features a state-of-the-art SHA-256
hash engine and an elliptic-curve hardware
accelerator.
Its 10kbit EEPROM array can be used to
store up to 16 keys, and for miscellaneous
read/write, read-only or secret data, and
consumption logging. Access to the various
sections of memory can be restricted in a
variety of ways and the configuration
subsequently locked to prevent changes.
All CryptoAuthentication devices feature a
wide array of hardware and software defence
mechanisms which prevent physical or logical
attacks on the device or data. Each device
ships with a guaranteed unique serial number.
Using the cryptographic protocols supported by
the device, a host system or remote server can
prove that the serial number is both authentic
and not a copy.
The hardware protection offered by the
ATECC108A is greatly superior to software-only

The AT88CK490 evaluation kit for the Atmel
CryptoAuthentication
family includes the ATSHA204(A),
ATAES132, and ATECC108 devices. This kit uses an
Atmel AT90USB1287 microcontroller and a convenient
USB interface which allows designers to experiment with
the CryptoAuthentication family on their PCs.
The complete source code for the Atmel AVR
®
is
available, along with a schematic, a bill-of-materials, and
Gerber files. The AT88CK490 evaluation kit has been

The new MCP19114 and MCP19115 from
Microchip are analogue-based controllers
with a digital interface, offering a
combination of adjustability and low cost
in a high-performance power-conversion
solution.
The new devices feature a step-up PWM
controller and a low-side MOSFET driver, with a
mid-voltage LDO and a fully functional
microcontroller integrated into a small package.
The microcontroller is a standard PIC
®
MCU
similar to the PIC12F617.
As hybrid digital/analogue control solutions,
the MCP19114 and MCP19115 offer the
speed and responsiveness expected of a high-
performance analogue control loop, while also
providing the flexibility expected of an MCU.
They can be configured to implement multiple
topologies including flyback, Ćuk, boost, and
Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Converter
(SEPIC).
Complete customisation of operating
parameters, start-up or shut-down profiles,
protection levels and fault-handling procedures
may be accomplished by setting digital
registers with Microchip’s development
software.
Both the MCP19114 and the MCP19115
support operation at up to 42V, making them
suitable for use in automotive applications,
while also supporting conventional 5V, 12V and
24V rails.
The devices’ loop implements peak current-
mode control. They can operate in quasi-
resonant mode or at a fixed frequency in a
range from 31.25kHz to 2MHz.
The MCP19114 is available in a 24-lead QFN
4mm x 4mm package, and the MCP19115 in a
24-lead 5mm x 5mm QFN.

The MCP19114 flyback stand-alone evaluation board
realises a flyback design supporting a 0V to 50V output
from an 8V to 14V input. Microchip’s full suite of

Precision multiplexer offers industry-best on-resistance
and low power consumption
VISHAy
Vishay Intertechnology has introduced
an 8-channel precision analogue
multiplexer, the DG1408. It combines
low on-resistance of 3.2Ω with
extremely low power dissipation,
parasitic capacitance and charge
injection.
The DG1408 is built on a new CMOS process
which is characterised by low and flat
resistance over the full signal range, providing
excellent linearity and low signal distortion.
In addition, the new multiplexer enhances the
performance of gain amplifiers, offering
improved circuit bandwidth and lower
sensitivity to leakage.
The DG1408’s low on-resistance makes it
preferable to mechanical relays, because it
eliminates the relay’s mechanical bounce.
A circuit based on the DG1408 is also smaller.
Parasitic capacitance is rated at 121pF, an
impressive value given the device’s low switch
on-resistance. The capacitance helps to create
a stable amplifier circuit. Drain on-capacitance
causes phase shift to the amplifier’s closed-
loop response, and when it is too large, the
amplifier circuit may become unstable and
oscillate. Low drain capacitance, together with
low on-resistance, also improves the data-
acquisition rate and accuracy.
Benefitting from low power losses, the
DG1408 draws just 17µA over the full signal
range, a marked improvement on the 220µA
value of the nearest competing device. Charge
injection is rated at 120pC.
The DG1408’s fast switching time is ideal for
circuits requiring low time constants.

Micro-power Hall switches raise detection-
circuit performance
DIODES INCORPORATED
Diodes Incorporated has introduced a
pair of sensitive Hall-effect switches
which offer the designer flexibility and
savings in both power and space.
The new AH1902 is an omnipolar device,
detecting both north and south magnetic
fields. In default mode, the programmable
AH1903 operates as a unipolar device,
detecting a south pole
at the surface of the
package which carries
the part marking.
The AH1903 also
offers an omnipolar
mode, enabling it to
meet the needs of
multiple applications,
and supporting
reconfiguration on the
fly in the event of a
problem with the field
direction. The
AH1903’s function is
changed using a
simple Select pin,
driven by an external
logic source or
microcontroller.
The high sensitivity of
both switches means
that relatively weak and inexpensive magnets
can be used, or detection distances extended.
The switches’ typical operating threshold
switch point is ±35G.
The AH1902 and AH1903 operate over a
voltage range of 1.6V to 3.6V. This
characteristic, coupled with an integral Sleep
function and a typical current of 4.3µA, makes
them ideally suited to battery-powered
applications.
The switches are provided in a variety of
low-profile, surface-mount packages. The
omnipolar AH1902 comes in the DFN1216-4, the
ultra-thin DFN2015-6 and SOT553 packages.
The AH1903 is available in the 1.2mm x
1.6mm x 0.5mm DFN1216-4 package, making
it the industry’s smallest programmable Hall
switch.
Operating and release points are stable over
the -40°C to 85°C temperature range.

STMicroelectronics has introduced a
miniature LDO voltage regulator which
provides an accurate
output up to 200mA
while keeping power
consumption to a
minimum when in
Shut-down mode.
The LD39020 regulator produces its
200mA maximum current from an input
voltage ranging from 1.5V to 5.5V, and
maintains output voltage to a guaranteed
accuracy of ±3%. Its typical drop-out voltage of
just 200mV keeps power losses low.
An Enable logic-control function puts the
LD39020 in a Shut-down mode in which it
draws total current of less than 0.1µA. Its low
power consumption and the low noise for
which LDOs are known, make the LD39020
suitable for low-power, battery-operated
applications.
The LD39020 has an internal
soft-start circuit. Increasing
the start-up time to
100µs, without the
need for an external
soft-start capacitor, the
device is able to keep in-
rush currents under control.
The device is stabilised
with a ceramic capacitor on the
output. It provides constant current and
thermal shut-down protection, which is
triggered at a typical 160°C.

The BTA308X-800C0 is a
high-commutation
three-quadrant 800V
triac in a SOT186A ‘full
pack’ plastic package.
This triac is intended for use in motor-
control circuits which are characterised
by high blocking voltages, and by high static
and dynamic voltage transients.
It will commutate the full rated current of 8A at
the maximum rated junction temperature of
125°C without the aid of a snubber.
The BTA308X-800C0 is planar-passivated,
which gives it ruggedness to withstand high
voltages, and enables highly reliable
operation. It is rated for a maximum
peak non-repetitive current of 60A.
The triac draws just 10µA when
turned off, at a junction
temperature of 25°C.

SLC NAND Flash memories now available in 2Gbit
and 4Gbit densities
MACRONIX
Macronix has started the production of
its second generation of Single-Level
Cell (SLC) NAND Flash memory ICs,
using advanced 36nm floating-gate
technology developed at its state-of-
the-art 300mm fabrication facility in
Taiwan.
The new SLC NAND family will be offered in
densities from 1Gbit to 8Gbit in both 3.0V and
1.8V versions. The devices feature an
extended industrial temperature range, and
benefit from longevity support to give OEMs
confidence that they will enjoy long-term
continuity of supply.
Initially released with an 8-bit Error
Correcting Code (ECC) requirement, these
new devices now require only 4-bit ECC for
every 512+16 bytes.
The two 36nm ICs, available in volume
production now, are the MX30LF2G18AC, a
2Gbit SLC NAND Flash memory IC, and the
MX30LF4G18AC, a 4Gbit part. Highly reliable,
the devices are rated for 100,000
programme/erase cycles, making them
suitable for all embedded system code- and
data-storage applications.
The MX30LFxG18AC memories are typically
accessed in pages of 2,112 bytes for read and
programme operations. The array is organised
as thousands of blocks, composed of 64 pages
of 2,048+64 bytes in two NAND strings, with
32 serially connected cells in each string. Each
page has an additional 64bytes of spare area
used for ECC storage and other purposes.
The device has an on-chip buffer of 2,112
bytes for data loading and access. Read-
access latency is rated at 25µs, and sequential
read access at 20ns.
The MX30LFxG18AC devices draw 30mA in
normal read, programme, erase operation, and
a maximum 50µA in standby mode.
