American Dream
an Apocalypse World hack by Abram Bussiere
This text will not provide you power, and the demons in it are not real although
our belief in them led us to destruction. This text is an apology, perhaps
admittedly a poor one in exchange for the ruined world I helped leave you.
But it may provide you diversion, and you help you understand what we were
thinking when we destroyed the world.
Maybe that will be useful. Maybe you’ll be wiser than us.
The Storyteller
One player assumes the role of the Storyteller. The Storyteller takes on the role of running the
American Empire the characters inhabit, but must follow certain rules.
Character Creation
Each player other than the Storyteller randomly creates a character by using coins to determine
their
Gender Role, Race,
Starting Wealth
and
.
They also create a name to call their character by.
These characters are young, just entering the larger society and trying to find their place each
world. They may or may not be close, but they know each other, and aren’t enemies, at least not
yet.
Gender Role
Flip a coin.
Heads, you have male genitalia, and you’re considered a ‘man’ by society.
Tails, you have female genitalia, and you’re considered a ‘woman’ by society.
If the coin flip lands on the edge, you have some mixture of the two, and are considered a
‘Freak’ by society.
You can attempt to be ‘transgender’ and live in another social role, but it is often
expensive to ‘pass, and if found out it’s not your assigned role, you’ll likely be considered
a Freak if you aren’t already.
Man
Whenever you express an emotion other than anger when interacting with others, +1 Coin
flipped.
Woman
Whenever you overtly attempt to take power or control when interacting with others: +2
Coins flipped.
Freak
Whenever you attempt to when interacting with other nonFreaks: +1 Coin flipped.
Race
Race is what preapocalypse society used to assign people to a role, based on a mixture of
physical appearance, such as skin and hair, and cultural tells and queues.
You can try to hide your race and live as another, but given as skin color is more easily
seen then genitalia, if anyone finds out, you’ll be considered a Freak for your race slot
this can stack. Doing so won’t affect your starting wealth.
Flip a coin, then follow the following tree to see what the outcome is:
Heads > White
Tails > Flip a coin.
Heads > Flip a coin.
Heads > White
Tails > Black
Tails > Flip a coin.
Heads > Hispanic
Tails > Flip a coin.
Heads > Asian
Tails > Flip a coin.
Heads > Native American
Tails > Biracial go to the top and flip twice.
White
You’re the ‘default’ in the society. People who look like you run society, and you’re always
given positive assumptions even when doing terrible things.
1 Coin Flipped when interacting with others.
Black
People who looked like you used to be the literal slaves of the
hite
W
people in this society, but
now people merely tend to look down on and fear you.
+2 Coins Flipped whenever trying to avoid being blamed or punished for a crime,
regardless of your actual guilt in the matter.
Hispanic
People believe you or your family came from the countries south of here, and you can look like a
bunch of things regardless, you’re often treated as a lazy unclean alien who is here to steal
people’s jobs(despite the laziness, somehow).
+1 Coin Flipped when trying to claim a place or status in society.
Asian
A country filled with people who look like you are the main competitors with America in
international power dynamics. People tend to think of you as mentally superior, but less
emotional.
1 Coin Flipped when claiming knowledge or technical expertise when interacting with
others.
+1 Coin flipped when expressing an emotion while interacting with others.
Native American
People who looked like you were the natives in this land before it was invaded by the ancestors
of the
hites,
W
who decimated the natives with the diseases they carried before taking over.
1 Coin Flipped when in social situations about any aspect of nature when interacting
with others.
+1 Coin Flipped when trying to claim a place or status in society.
Starting Wealth
Flip a number of coins based on your
Race
:
White: 10 coins.
Asian: 7 coins.
Other: 1 coin.
For each Head flipped, flip another coin, for each Head then newly flipped, flip another coin, and
so forth. When you stop flipping Heads, the number of coins is your Starting Wealth get a
number of tokens of some kind to represent this.
From here on, you may spend Wealth on rolls if you have time to buy stuff and prepare:
Spending 1 Wealth gives 1 Coin Flipped on a roll, 2 Wealth gives 2 Coins Flipped, 4 Wealth
gives 3 Coins Flipped, and so forth.
Start of Session Move
The Storyteller explains how society is moving around you in ways beyond your control. In
doing so, they also make a Hard Move.
