Australian by
birth, Tony
Holmes was a
published
aviation
author by the
age of 20.
Moving to
England in 1988 to further his
career, he has run the aviation book
list for Osprey Publishing ever
since. Aside from being a regular
contributor to numerous aviation
journals across the globe, Tony has
also written more than 50 books and
edited a further 300 in the past two
decades. A veteran of 25 aircraft
carrier embarks across the globe, he
was presented with the Contributor
of the Year award for 2004-05 by the
US Navy’s Tailhook association —
he is the only non-American to have
received this prestigious prize.

Back in the game
T ISN’T OFTEN that one sees an all-new
aircraft type for the first time. So, the
appearance of two Kawasaki P-1s at July’s
Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF
Fairford, UK, was extremely welcome.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense
Force (JMSDF) rarely ventures abroad, but the
invitation to come to the UK comes at a time
when all eyes are on the potential for Britain to
acquire a new maritime patrol aircraft (MPA).
There have been regular recent reports of
NATO MPAs being called upon to help patrol
UK waters to react to potential submarine
incursions. With such high levels of attention
being placed on the current air policing and
quick reaction alert missions, it is easy to see
why there is renewed emphasis on the MPA
role around the UK’s shores.
The RAF retired its last Nimrod maritime
patrol aircraft in 2010, leaving a gaping
capability gap. Five years on, the participation
of the P-1s in both the static and flying displays
at Fairford was no coincidence. JMSDF VADM
Makoto Sato is quoted as saying, ‘we hope
we can show the P-1’s high manoeuvrability
and low-level capabilities to Europe and the
world’. He added: ‘The P-1 has been developed
especially for Japan’s national security
environment, with a magnetic anomaly detector
[for tracking submarines].’
The UK maintains Project ‘Seedcorn’, with
numerous personnel embedded in exchange
postings with allied MPA communities,
notably with the growing US Navy P-8
Poseidon fleet. It is easy to see how most
would view the Boeing platform as a natural
choice for the UK; however, a competition is
highly likely, and hopefully all contenders,
including the charismatic P-1, will be
judged on merit and potential for this very
important mission.
