Welcome to the October issue of Popular Patchwork.
Other seasons creep up very gradually, so slowly that they
merge into one another, however autumn always seems to
arrive with a dramatic
ourish. The change between the last days
of summer, and the fresh days of autumn seem to happen so suddenly
that before I know it I am walking my dog in the park through big piles of leaves. It is hard
to not feel inspired by the earthy colours outside the window, reds, oranges and browns,
and the graphic shapes you see when looking up to the sky through the branches of
the leafless trees. I have one particular friend who loves autumn, and every year I see
her carrying leaves of different shapes and sizes that she has carefully selected from the

This issue has two autumn themed projects,

Over the summer I have read lots about the price of milk, and the widening gap
between what a pint of milk costs to buy in a supermarket, and how much it actually
costs the farmers to produce. One debate I heard asked whether we, the consumer, had
lost touch with the way our food is produced. After hearing discussions between quilters
about the price of fabric I wondered whether we too had lost touch with the processes
required to turn a plant into the highly
nished material we love to use in quilt making.
Our new contributor, Lorna Slessor, looked into the journey cotton takes to get from plant
to shop, and all the different elements that combine to make it the price it is (page 46).

Every year (about December 23rd) I say I am going to start making my Christmas
projects earlier, and every year (about January 7th) I decide I would rather be making
current projects! So I am thrilled to be dipping a toe in the festive water, and sharing with

a Nordic inspired wall hanging from Mandy
Munroe (page 76). It looks very crisp and seasonal in red and white
however, I think it would also look stunning in a navy and white
colourway plus you could sneak it on the wall any time of year!
