The
world
acknowledges
that
modern
American
painters
have
set
the
pace
in
art
since
the
War.
Yet
by
contrast
their
forefathers
have
been
disgracefully
neglected.
This
book
goes
some
way
to
redress
the
balance.
In
a
skilful
survey
of
the
American
achievement,
the
author
shows
how
it
is
no
longer
possible
to
dismiss
American
painting
as
the
poor
cousin
of
Western
art.
Indeed,
far
away
from
the
influence
of
the
European
giants,
early
American
painters
soon
developed
an
independent
style
characterised
by
its
fastidious
naturalism.
This
naturalism
recurs
throughout
the
history
of
American
painting,
from
the
early
portraits
and
those
of
John
Singleton
Copley
to
the
Photo-realists
of
the
1970s.
In
the
19th
century,
America
not
only
produced
Romantic
and
Impressionist
painters
but
also
two
remarkable
schools
of
her
own:
the
Luminists
and
the
trompe
Voeil
still-life
painters.
Long
underrated,
these
works
are
now
beginning
to
be
recognised
as
making
a
unique
contribution
to
the
history
of
Western
art.
Ian
Bennett,
who
is
on
the
staff
of
the
fine
art
auctioneers,
Sotheby's
of
London,
first
became
interested
in
American
paintings
when
they
began
to
pass
through
his
hands
at
the
London
salerooms.
He
writes,
therefore,
not
only
with
the
knowledge
of
the expert
but
(admittedly)
with
the
enthusiasm
of
the
convert.
It is
a
pleasure
to
be
led
through
the
history
of
American
painting
by such
sympathetic
guide.
