It was a great show for SAM
Publications, and while I was
pleased to recommend David go
and represent the magazines this
year, I have missed the double
delights of Dean’s and Denny’s, so
will be back in the saddle next year.
Meanwhile the Brats are back to
school tomorrow, Eduard have
announced masks and no less than
three etched sets for my kit of the
year – see this month’s Benchmarks
– and my cup is accordingly filled to
the extent that only one thing now
remains missing. A new-tool 1/48
Buccaneer… Come on somebody!

t is always gratifying when
the competition react to
what you are doing and
change their format to
emulate yours. Even more so
when they react to what you were
doing a while back and change
their format to emulate the one
you realised was redundant and
have now revised. I am sure Sun
Tzu would have regarded this as
some kind of tactical advantage.
Fortunately the ramifications are
above my pay grade so I am not
obliged to concern myself with it
unduly. Changes made to this
title, however, are my remit, and
they are made without reference
to other titles, but to the changing
demands of the marketplace and
the fast moving technological
revolution that is affecting the
print medium all across the board.
The bottom line is we have to
focus on what we do best, and do
more of it.
So with this in mind we have
been rejigging the content as ever,
forcing in more and cutting out the
flotsam. This month’s issue is
absolutely crammed again, and I am
delighted with the amount we have
managed to shoehorn in – including
a timely photoshoot by Raymond
Ball of the Avro Trio at home. I have
had the good fortune to be
underneath both Vulcan and
Lancasters twice this summer – both
times in completely random
locations, and I can only hope Mr
Putin’s agents have had a similar
experience whichever bushes they
are lurking under these days. The
trio has been so busy throughout
August that one could be forgiven
for imagining that the RAF is once
more in a position to send forth
‘great clouds of aeroplanes’, and that
any assumption that we are no
longer a global force is entirely
erroneous. Of course one of the
Lancs is Canadian, so technically not
ours at all, but let’s hope those
shadowy agencies that seek our
demise have not been informed…
