Bias binding can be bought in plain colours at your local
haby/fabric store and is a good staple to have in your
favourite colours in your sewing stash.

However, sometimes having binding in a patterned fabric
that coordinates with your project gives a much more
satisfying outcome.
To make bias binding you will need
1.
Fabric, washed, dried and pressed (a lot of tutori-
als require a whopping 1 yard, this makes a lot of bind-
ing, use what you have ok?)

Quilters rule

Tailors chalk, or my favourite, a 2B pencil
4.
Rotary cutter
5.
Self healing cutting mat
6.
Scissors
7.
Sewing machine
8.
Thread
9.
Pins
10.
Optional but useful – bias tape maker (Clover do
them)
Our quick instructions here are:
Determine how wide you would like your tape to
be, the strips you cut will be 4 times the width of that
Fold your fabric in half, pin together at the edges
if that helps you align it
Using your quilters rule to get a 45 degree angle
to the edge of the fabric, draw a series of parallel lines if
you are anxious, or be bold and
brave and cut them straight away
with the rotary cutter
Using the rotary cutter
and quilters rule (preferred for
neatest edges) cut the strips out,
scissors if you don’t
have one
You will have a
number of V shaped
strips which you will
need to snip with your
scissors
Joining the strips: Right Sides Together put the
strips together at a 90 degree angle. Stitch at a 45 degree
angle. Join them all so you have one continuous piece of
fabric strip. Snip off the tiny triangle edges that protrude
along the middle of the long edge. Press until you have a
crisp edge.

Open up the folded bit of fabric. Now you will
fold the raw long edges in together to the middle crease.
Press.
Now fold it back together on the original fold.
Press.
Wind on a card and you are done
Using a Tape Maker
Take your strip of fabric Right Side DOWN and
your bias tape maker, feed the strip of fabric into the U
shaped opening at the widest part of the wedge. On

the bottom side there is a peep hole which is extremely
handy because you can use a pin to poke in there and
guide the fabric out of the business end

Then fold the binding
over the top around
the raw fabric edges,
turning the final edge

Your iron needs to be as hot at the fabric can
take, cotton setting if you are using cotton, low heat for
polyesters
Do it SLOWLY. As the fabric strip emerges from
the business end of the tape you will see that it is folded
in on itself from either edge. Only pull out a bit at a time
and press it. With steam. Mind your fingers.
You will need to keep moving the tape and tape
maker along the ironing board so you don’t go off the
edge
Once you are at the end, fold it in on itself at the
small gap left by the fabric in the middle and press again.
Wrap around a bit of card until it is ready to use.
And now it’s time to attach
the binding.
So
easy!
To do this open out your binding on one side and align
one raw edge of your binding to the folded and stitched
straight edge of the fabric, right sides together, pin in
place and sew along the crease.
