I HAVE read Three Little Words
in the June 1987 issue of Dragon
User, and I feel quite strongly
about the negative comments
made a b o u t S tylo g ra p h . I t
seems obvious that Mr. Merrick
has not been able to master
rudimentary 05-9.
I will not argue that Stylo can
be enhanced by an BO column
screen display, and of course
two drives are better than one.
But Stylo is in the league of any
PC word processor I have seen.
For the comment on the double
linefeed, he should read David
Rothery's article in the March
1987 issue, and check the DIP
switches on his printer. One of
these w i l l co n t ro l t h e l i n e
feed/carriage re t u rn mo d e ,
Reverse the switch and all will

mode. but it is not necessary to
ditch your current printer!
The vo lu me o f me mo ry is
governed by the user. To obtain
15K on a level one system, use
a parameter value on the Stylo
calling statement, eg Stylo letter
E18K, which should give you 501

masterpiece is longer, you can
unload what you have written to
disc, and carry on writing, and
thewhole document will remain
under the same filename. The
limit to the size of your docu-
ment is effectively the size of
your formatted disc.
The Spell and Ma il me rg e

sional. The standard dictionary
contains 40.000 words, and you
can add as many as you like.
Mail merge gives the ability to
print multiple copies and make
text substitutions while printing.
If you run a small business,
OS-9 is most certainly suited. A
bit of upgrade to your Dragon
64, like a second disc drive, pro-
per monitor etc. is worth the in-
vestment. There are packages
like Cash and VAT and Stock

I HAVE read Three Little Words
in theJune issueand I think Mr.
Me rrick h a s n o t re a d t h e
manuals carefully. All of the pro-
grams can be used successfully
if understood. They have vast
differences o f operation, and
since they have to work with a
selection of printers, need time
to b e u s e d t o t h e i r b e s t
advantage.

OS-9 is complex and can be

automatic in its use of the OS-9

know o n ly a little to use it, A

find OS-9 with its utilities a god-
send. Also, the idea of putting
OS-9 in ROM would remove one
all her original works onto OS-9
formatted diskettes.

that the number of commands
available is only limited by the
size of your disc, and that extra
utilities a re re a d ily available
from the public domain through
user groups.
I am puzzled by Mr. Merrick's
use o f MFIREE to ch e ck th e
memory available. If you call this
from Stylo, you are checking
what is left to OS-9, not what is
available to your text. You can
call d if f e re n t a mo u n t s o f
memory for text, using STYLI)
r 15K, f o r example, a n d t h e

more you ask for, the less will
show on MFIREE! Also, OS-9
version 2.0 has a better screen
driver, and is on buff, not green,
which Mr. M e r r i c k p re fe rs.
However, u s i n g t h e C o m -
pusense Dra g o n P lu s b o a rd
gives a marvellous 80 column
display and an almost instan-
taneous ramdisc on which your
commands may be put. I would
argue that even allowing for the
hundred pounds or so for the
add-on, yo u h a ve a syste m
wh ich w o u l d c o m p e t e
favourable with much more ex-
pensive machines. Stylo can
made Telewriter seem like a toy
by comparison, useful as it is.
Telewriter on disc does right
justify. Just pressJ in the format
menu. and K to remove it. The
problem with Telewriter is that it
is all too easy to lose text — try
printing Out before saving, and
with some printer settings you

Once again, the OS-9 Users
did not attract me, but I decided
to try it_ I have put in and tested
most of the programs in DU but
this is in my opinion the best. It
is very good with the use of col-
our, and is easy to play. When
playing it you must think quite a
bit. If you have June 1984 and
want a good game, try it.
This is not necessary, but I
recommend you to change line

Amateur ones go right off their
trollies. You can't get away from
it, you see, except by leaving the
country. Wh ich you can't do,
becausethere's too much work.
The August Update has arti-
cles on Pascal for beginners,
easy machine code. running C
under DragonDOS, a review of
Music Maker, some DeltaDOS
news (with Dave Martin waxing

users aren't registering. What,
not speaking to each other?

couple of small Tandy hardware
reviews, some good advice for
people thinking of starting their
own ma g a z in e s (a f t e r t h e
demise of Dragon's Tail), and a
review of Ouickbeam's Galactic
Gus w h i c h brings me to

sounding o f f a b o u t p e o p le

cations. Which usually means
Dragon User I only found Out
about Galactic Gus when it was

over it. Now, whereas I entirely
believe i n t h e a u t h o r's i n -
nocence— it's so diff icult to get
things p rin te d th a t it a lwa ys
seems like good sense to run off
four copies and send them to
different publications — I have
to request that anyone else who
feels in n o ce n t , g e t s wis e .
Broad-mindedness is all very
well, but actually people don't
like buying two different mags
and reading the same things in
both of them (the occasional
reprint is acceptable, but that's
all), and if you think about it,
writers are pretty lazy, and if we
all did that you'd have a choice

every morning. So please don't
dolt. At best you won't get paid.
and at worst you will be very un-
popular, and have even more
difficulty getting things printed.

asked Paul if he minded it being
