How to submit articles
The quality of the material we can publish in
Dragon User each month will, to a very great
extend, depend on t he quality of t he dis -
coveries that you can mak e with your Dra-
gon. The Dragon 32 computer was launched
on to the market with a powerful version of
Basic, but with very poor documentation_
Every one of us who uses a Dragon will be
able to discover new tricks and quirks almost
every day. To help other Dragon users keep
up with the speed of the development each
of u s mu s t a s s u me t hat w e ma d e t h e
discovery first — that means writing it down
and passing it on to others.

announced th a t th e receivers h a d be e n c a lle d i n following " th e c ontinuing
difficulties o f establishing profitable tra ding i n the UK a nd othe r pa rts o f the
world".
Obviously this threatens the future of the new Dragon Professional, previewed
on p a g e 9 o f t h is issu e . B u t t h e co mp a n y sa ys it " h a s co n fi d e n ce in it s n e w
products a nd the market opportunities they represent and will be using its best
endeavours in helping the receivers to explore ways of continuing trading".
The company has been no stranger to stories of financial problems. It was last
September that a E 2
the company insisted tha t this s um was primarily a n investment, but outsiders

saw m more ias a rescue package. At the time the difficulties were attributed partly

to poor salesi last summer. The message at the beginning of this June was similar

but not restricted to a specific season: "The home computer market was not as

buoyant as people believed." Earlier this year British Home Stores decided to stop

selling the 32 and cleared its shelves by selling the machine at a bargain basement

price. Rival chain store Boots, responsible for so many Dragon sales, was also

n
expected c drop the 32 but to continue selling software for the machine.

d The 32 is an old micro now in microcomputing terms and was unable to resist

the challenge of newer machines, The time taken to release disk drives hindered
the 32's growth while the 64, an attempt to move upmarket, was little more than an

upgraded 32, A further delay. between the arrival of the 64 and the applications

Mettoy which, faced by its own financial problems, sold rights to the machine to

OUR reviewers do a great job
with limited time to examine all
the games they are sent. but it is
a little annoying for a small com-
pany trying t o d o something
about the quality and price of
Dragon cassettes, t o fi nd it s
offering criticised f o r features
which have specifically been
taken care of.
The reviewer of - -

"squashed" too frequently by the
walls of the maze. with the conse-
quent tedium of waiting for the
game t o re-initialise. However.
there is a command listed in the
instructions which prevents this
happening, and both my 7- arid
4-year-old sons have no trouble
in using it in time.
In fact. "Witchway w a s de-
liberately designed s o that the
player is rarely killed at random
and should have a long playing
time. The wait to restart then
comes as more of a welcome
rest'
However, jus t i n case this
should s till be an irritation t o
some. I have now taken care of it
by omitting certain sections of
initialisation o n subsequent
games (unless the difficulty level
is altered). I have also now dis-
abled the BREAK key in sections
where its inadvertent use would
wreck the screen display. and
CONT would be useless.

IHAVE discovered something in-
teresting in Microdeal's Cuthbert
in the Jungle (Pitfall)
While running along I fell down
one of the holes into the Scor-
pion's Domain, Then when I was
climbing up a ladder I jumped Of
half-way (this only happens very
rarely). This meant I was sus-
pended i n mid-air — i t also
enabled me to walk above the
scorpions so they could not bite
me.

about the Pan Personal Computer
News book Sixty Programs for
the Dragon 32. My complaint is
about the listings — some prog-
rams have lines left out and
others have the wrong com-
mands. At the price of E4.95 I
should have thought that there
would be no errors in the book
If anyone has the book and has
managed to correct the error in
the Dalaxians program could they
please send me the correct list-
ing

WE HAVE had several queries
concerning t h e list in g s p u b -
use the BUILD command on the
essential 0S9 system disk t o
prepare text files. This is not
actually an editor but it does allow
you to create text files, although if
you make a mistake when using
BUILD you have to rewrite the text
from scratch
This is obviously rather frus-
trating if you only want to use
RMS, but it seems unlikely that
many users will fall into that
category. One of the virtues of
059 is that i t is a complete
interlocking system with a com-
mon file structure, which can be
accessed by any utility, and we
would expect users who opt for
0S9 to also have at least one
other package containing a lull
editor. We trust that this explains
the situation clearly.
