Samsø’s main attraction is undoubtedly the wonderfull nature and varied landscape.
Naturewise Samsø is a piece of Denmark in miniature: coastlines with steep slopes, a hilly
landscape with deep valleys and glacial gorges, moorland, fertile farmlands and a bay
with many islands and islets. The colorfull fields full of vegetables and potatoes also gives
the landscape a specific character.
In this leaflet we have gathered some of the island’s most spetacular sights.

1.
Ballebjerg
From Nordby a road leads west to Ballebjerg that, being 64 meters, is
Samsø´s highest point. From here, you can enjoy the view westward
across Tunø and all the way to Aarhus. To the east, you can see the small
islands Kyholm, Lindholm, Rump and Vejrø towards Zealand. Balleb-
jerg Watchtower was built in 1920. Today, Nordby Citizen Association
maintains the tower and the area.

Brattingsborg Gods and forest
On the southern part of the island lies Brattingsborg Gods surrounded
by fields and trees overlooking the sea. The Estate was established in
1677 and has belonged to the family Danneskiold-Samsøe ever since.
The castle was built in 1871. There is no public access to the castle or
the buildings, but it’s possible to take a walk in the forest or visit the
garden on certain dates during summer by admission.

Besser Rev
A few kilometres northeast of Besser you find a 5 km long overseas
reef, bounding Stauns Fjord and an extraordinary bird’s territory. With
suitable shoes, you can hike to the tip of the reef and make a stopover
at Hønsepold, from where you have a great overview of the fjord. Far-
ther out along the reef you find an entrenchment from the wars with
England (1801-1814). From here can see the strong currant water to
Kyholm. Remember that in the beginning of the reef you have to cross
Draget, from where there is a risk of flooding during high tide.

Dyret
Between Onsbjerg and Tanderup lies Dyret, which rises 51 meters
above the ground level and thus the highest point of the southern part
of Samsø. From there you have a fabulous view. In pagan times, people
called Dyret - the Mountain of Odin, which has given name to the
village of Onsbjerg. As it was taboo to mention Odin by name the locals
decided to name it Dyret. During the Second World War, the Germans
had an observation post on the hill. Dyret has also been a gathering
point for local meetings. You find access to the hill from the roads on
both the east and west side.
5.
Besser udsigtstårn
The watchtower is located east of the village of Besser and is built on
top of an old mill. The original mill was burned down in 1913, when
the mill was used as a movie set. During summer, the tower is used for
minor cultural events. Along a small path, you can walk all the way to
the east coast.

Heden
Nordby Hede (moor) lies between Mårup Skov and Stavns Fjord on the
northern part of the Island. It is a protected area, and you must follow
the instructions. However, it is a beautiful walk especially when the
heather blooms. In the Stone Age Samsø was divided in two – the
north island and the south island. Land elevation and sediment from
the sea has since tied the two islands together. You can buy a miniguide
for hiking around Samsø at Samsø Erhvers- og Turistcenter.

Ilse Made Kilde
In Vesterløkken, you find Ilse Made Kilde, a holy spring. Fresh water
springs from a hollow oak trunk dated back to the Bronze Age. An old
legend says that the spring appeared from where a dead woman once
washed ashore. Around her neck she carried a golden crucifix. Horses
couldn’t drag the body to the churches of Tranebjerg and Kolby, but
they easily found their way to the church in Onsbjerg. Here, the woman
was buried and the golden crucifix was hung in the choir. If you drink
from the spring on the night of Valborg, between 30th of April and 1st
of May, it is said that the water has a curative effect.

Issehoved
The very northern tip of Samsø is formed like the tip of Denmark in
Skagen. The nature around the tip is still changing due to the prevailing
winds and waves. In clear weather, you can see Aarhus, Mols, Helgenæs
with Ellemandsbjerget and the light tower of Sletterhage (approx.12
km). Further east, you can see the ferry port in Ebeltoft and the island
of Hjelm. You get to the northern tip along a narrow road from Nordby
or along the marked trails in the hills, for example from Langdalen.

Kanhave Kanalen
The canal of Kanhave is the narrowest point on Samsø and was con-
structed by Vikings in year 726. For that time it was excellent engineer-
ing. The Vikings used the canal as a quick way to transport ships from
Stavns Fjord to the bay of Sælvig. Nowadays the canal is considered a
recess in the landscape.

Møgelskår
Møgelsskår is the most typical ”groove” – ie valley in Nordby Bakker
(hills). Domed hills and deep valleys make the landscape a unique
sight. Their ”sheep paths” characterize the grassy slopes facing the sea,
a geological phenomenon that manifests itself as small narrow ledges.
Hiking in the area you will often meet cattle or Gute-sheep, a Gotland
breed that is a part of municipality´s preservation program.

Nordby Bakker
The unique landscape around Nordby Bakker (hills) was formed during
the last glacial period (from 15-100.000 years ago). It stretches from
Asmindør Hage in the south to Issehoved in the north and consists of
hills, interrupted by deep valleys - called grooves. Nordby Bakker was
appointed “Naturkanon” (special preserved location) in 2009 by the
Ministry of Forest and Nature. A leaflet on hiking trips can be bought at

12.
Stauns Fjord
Stauns Fjord is a stone-filled shallow water, which is traversed by a
deep, current channel which requires local knowledge if you want to
sail in it. Scattered around the bay, you see many small islets covered
with grass and trees. The public has no access to the islets because they
are protected and reserved for the breeding birds. However, nature lov-
ers still have the opportunity to experience the distinctive and beautiful
area when they follow the marked hiking trails around the bay.
13.
Vesborg Fyr
The lighthouse, located on the southwest tip of Samsø was built in
1858 on top of the old castle of Visborg. The lighthouse is 19 m tall, but
being situated on the bank gives it a total height of 36 m. From here,
you have a fantastic view of the inner Danish waters, which made it a
perfect place to locate the medieval castle Visborg. The remains can still
be spotted in the area.
