Virgin
Territory
The Virgin Games empire, swol-
len by the acquisition of New
Generation Software and
Leisure Genius In recent months
Is set to unleash some promis-
ing titles Including the official
Scalextrlc game, the long
awaited Dan Dare and the
Virgin Atlantic Challenger
game based on the exploits ot
the ubiquitous Richard Branson.
Nick Alexander, Virgin's
managing director, explained
why Virgin had adopted the
'acquire to survive' strategy.
"We see the software market
very quickly developing Into a
situation where there are per-
haps six to 12 sottware houses
who become software pub-
lishers representing a whole
range ot different labels.
*he reason this Is hap-
pening Is lhat wholesalers and
distributors are controlling the
market at the moment aT the
expense ot the software
producers.
"II a company like us can
acquire other labels It means
we are In a position to talk to
retailers directly and have a
bigger Influence on what goes
on the shelves."
Virgin's expansion Is not
likely to stop with the snapping
up of New Generation {Mac-
hine Code Tutor, Jonah Barring-
ton Squash, Trashman) and
Leisure Genius who had the
licensing rights to Scalextric
Cluedo and Monopoly. In the
pipeline are Now Games III,
Scalextrlc (September release)
and Imminently, to coincide
with the Virgin Challenger's
Iransallanllc record attempt, a
game that takes you to the
heart ot Virgin territory.
"it's going to be a fun
arcade simulation with Richard
running about in frantic efforts
to keep the entire empire run-
ning smoolhly,"
Sadly, Virgin's Spectrum
releases will not Include the
ome of James Clavel's novel
hogun.
"Unfortunately it's proved
Impossible to cram the game
onlo the Spectrum. There are
aboul 40 different characters all
trying to subvert each other to
achieve power and It's a very
complicated piece of coding."
There are no plans tor a
Spectrum 128 version. "With a
new machine you are looking
at long development times and
until there is a larger user base
It doesn't add up. long term sur-
vival In this business depends
on limiting the amount of risks
you take."
Scheduled for release in
August is Dan Dare, a game
whose development has Deen
bedevilled with problems and
delays, so much so that some
suspect the Mekon must be res-
ponsible However, a look at the
unfinished version is proof
enough that the wait will be
worth It, as Dan Dare features
stunning graphics, which are
almost alien to the Spectrum
and level upon level of frenetic
action.
The Mekon has aimed a hol-
lowed out asteroid at the earth
and Dan must break Into the
control room and set ott the self
destruct mechanism before the
world Is blown to smithereens.
There are over a 100 screens
swarming with five kinds of
Treens, the Mekon's minions,
who will Imprison Dan in the iso-
lation cell given half a chance
Lift shafts connect the different
areas of the complex and they
may be the safesl place as the
corridors are lined with gun
ports set into the walls.
The presentation of the
ome Is designed to be as
faithful to Ihe original cartoon
strip as possible and captions
come up to keep you aware of
the Mekon's Intentions. In the
bottom right hand corner ol the
screen is an animated picture
of the Mekon's face and you
con look forward to a confron-
tation with the Mekon towards
the end of the aame
As for the software industry's
future, Nick Alexander feels
there are real grounds for
optimism.
"I think the signs are healthy
and we've passed that point
where games are looked on as
just a fad With the cutting down
of the number ot software
houses there will be less pro-
duct but It will be easier to pre-
sent It to Ihe public, and with a
return to profitability there's the
opportunity to start taking a few
risks and hopefully bring In
some Innovations. Like com-
pact disc ROMs and compact
disc Interaction
—
there are a
tot of creative opportunities
there"
Pausing for a moment to
ponder on whether compact
disc technology would leave
the Spectrum back In the stone
age of computing. Nick added,
"Someone somewhere Is bound
lo bring out a compact disc
Interface"

of the menacing dragon. Run-
