Welcome
couple of summers ago I went to the St Magnus Festival in Orkney for the rst time
and got a sense of the unique atmosphere of the place – a landscape that is both
familiar and strange, the quality of light (especially around the summer solstice),
and of course the isolation. I realise that’s a city dweller’s thing to say and your average
Orcadian might reasonably suggest that cramming oneself on to an underground train every
morning is what’s really peculiar – perhaps using a tinned herring simile.
But I had wondered why Peter Maxwell Davies – born in Salford, educated on the other
side of the river, not least in that remarkable Manchester College of Music class that included
Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr and John Ogdon, and established as a composer with
an international reputation by the age of 35 – chose to withdraw from the hubbub.
en again, he was no recluse. As well as continuing to work and travel of course, and
becoming an establishment gure (though a politically dissident one, and never a yes man),
he also bedded in to the Orkney community, maintaining a strand of composing with the
local schoolchildren in mind. At his 80th birthday concert during the festival, which he was
luckily able to attend – his health had been failing for some time – it could hardly be clearer
how much he was appreciated.
ENO has resolved its dispute with its chorus, with concessions made on both sides, though the
singers have had to accept a nine-month contract and consequent reduction in their guaranteed
pay, as a well as a reduction in their number from 44 to 40. It appears that the company’s
undertaking to nd work for the chorus beyond this core contract is serious enough to get Equity
on board, and the threatened strike did not take place. e company seems to be positioning
itself as a more exible beast, performing work in and out of the Coliseum – diversifying, in
management speak. e fact is, the Arts Council has less cash than it used to due to austerity
budgeting, and some things were bound to change. is appears to be one of them.
