With an uncharacteristically fine British summer, and the
accompanying distractions of holidays, gardening and obligatory days
out, now behind us, this is the perfect time to retreat indoors and
immerse yourself with your collection. To help you while away the
first, ever-darkening autumn evenings, we are proud to present this
bumper, 198-page issue of
Gibbons Stamp Monthly.
With an even larger
selection of articles and features to choose from, I’m sure you will find
plenty to keep you occupied during the upcoming chilly evenings.
I would like to start off this issue by introducing Alison Boyd as the
new sub-editor on
Gibbons Stamp Monthly.
Alison brings with her many
years of editorial experience, which I’m sure will benefit the editorial
team and the magazine greatly.
As a keen sailor, Alison is a great lover of all things nautical, which
is why she is perfectly placed to ‘cut her
GSM
teeth’ with a report on
Royal Mail’s latest commemorative issue. With 2013 marking the 70th
anniversary of the turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic, this
latest issue from Royal Mail makes a timely salute to Britain’s long and
distinguished Merchant Navy heritage. You can enjoy Alison’s first
editorial voyage for

on page 36.
I hail from central England, which is about as far away from the
coast as you can travel without heading to the one of the opposite
side of the country. This means, discarding the odd leisure barge and
resident shopping trollies found on and in the Midland’s substantial
canal network (it has more waterways than Venice, don’t you know), I
have very little knowledge of any type of water craft whatsoever. In fact,
what I know about sailing and ships you could probably write on the
back of the proverbial postage stamp—which brings me nicely onto
one of the topics introduced by John Holman in his latest offering
for new collectors. This month, John explains how the reverse of a
postage stamp can be just as interesting and important as the design
on the front. From varieties in watermark and gum, to security
markings and advertising slogans, John explains why every collector
should ‘ flip over’ their stamp collection.
Another offering found in this month’s eclectic mix of articles
to help see you through the first autumn evenings of 2013 is
Peter Martin’s study of the autogiro and its short, but important,
contribution to postal history. In his article, Peter traces the
development of this amazing aircraft from its first flight in the early
1920s to its revolutionary role in delivering the mail. Illustrated with a
very attractive array of covers and postcards, this is a great introduction
to an often overlooked area in both postal and aviation history.
Ian Hamilton continues the high-flying theme by looking at how
stamps can be used to chart the history of mankind’s obsession with
achieving flight—from the not-so-successful early attempts of the early
‘birdmen’, both real and mythical, right up to the Wright bothers’ first
successful attempt at sustained flight.
If you prefer to collect the high-flyers of GB stamps then make sure
you take a look at this month’s study of the overseas use of the Lilacs
and Greens issue of 1883–84. Richard Malim, John Roe and Patrick
Cassels explain how, despite the relatively limited scope of the series,
you can still build up an interesting collection of stamps and variations
without the need to spend large sums of money
on the scarcer material.
So, with the weather already taking a turn for
the worst, make yourself a hot drink, and settle
down with this latest, bumper issue of
