Dear Reader
I am going to be very British this month… I am going to complain
about the weather. After months of high-winds and downpours of
biblical proportions (always good for a rant or two) we now have
the kind of weather that is pushing mercury levels to near bursting
point. Cursed with the kind of delicate skin usually associated with
blood-sucking members of the Transylvanian aristocracy, sunlight
has not always been my friend. Even, when checking phosphor
stamps with a UV light I have to be careful not to burst into flames
(well not quite, but you get the idea).
Although summer is traditionally the time when many collectors
turn their attention to the garden rather than their stamps, I would
much rather have a pair of tweezers in my hand than a trowel; that
is why my garden is a beautiful mix of patio and low-maintenance
(and inevitably doomed) potted plants. I salute all you green-
fingered philatelists, but as you read this month’s
GSM
in your
beautifully cultivated gardens, hopefully you will find something in
this issue to temp you back inside to your stamps.
If you are in your garden while reading this month’s issue then
spare a thought for our native bees. These hugely important and
very fascinating creatures have been having quite a rough time of
it over the past few years. Of course, as all you gardeners will know,
as important pollinators bees are vital for our ecology and their
decline presents a serious threat to not only our gardens but also
our food chain. To highlight the plight of the bumblebee (pun
intended!), and other British species, Royal Mail has issued a new
stamp set that represent several types of British bees that are under
threat. Discover more on page 34.
Going from bees to MBEs, I would like to add my personal
congratulations to Hugh Jefferies, my predecessor on
GSM
and
current SG Catalogue Editor, who was named in The Queen’s
Birthday Honours list. In the coming months, Hugh will be
receiving an MBE for Services to Philately. Well done, Hugh;
this is a thoroughly deserved honour. You can read more about
