Welcome to
Stamp & Coin Mart
Covering global hobbies such as stamp and coin collecting
certainly provides plenty of variety. A quick browse through
this issue will present you with stamps and coins from all
corners of the world and from many different time periods.
Of course, collecting stamps from your own country is the
natural step for many, and we pay particular attention to
British stamps in this and every issue, but with so much choice from
the rest of the world it’s almost impossible to limit yourself to just
these stamps. I have to admit my albums reflect this dilemma, with
all manner of countries rubbing shoulders. I should probably be more
disciplined and have a good sort-out, but why limit yourself to one
or two countries, when there are beautiful stamps with fascinating
stories from countless others?
So how do you decide what to collect? According to experienced
stamp dealer and auctioneer Andrew McGavin there are a number
of factors you should consider before diving in to a new country or
topic, most notably the potential cost of the collection. I discovered
this myself after I decided to collect some of the USA’s earlier issues.
I couldn’t quite stretch to the nicely centred examples I had initially
hoped for and had to have a re-think. If only I’d read Andrew’s tip first!
Whether you’re thinking of starting a new collection, buying a
catalogue or going to an auction, it’s always helpful to have some
friendly advice first. The ‘Tips of the Trade’ booklet given away free
with this issue offers many words of wisdom and I’m sure you’ll find it
valuable no matter how long you’ve been collecting.
Once you’re equipped with these tips, and have been inspired by
the many countries and subjects covered in every issue of
Stamp &
Coin Mart,
the world is your oyster!

Meet the contributors…
John Apfelbaum has spent a lifetime learning about
stamps and stamp collecting. He runs the venerable
firm of stamp professionals Earl PL Apfelbaum, a
business that has dealt in only stamps since 1901
and which was founded by his great grandfather.
Devlan Kruck is a philatelist, postal historian and
stamp dealer. You can find out more about his work
at his website: www.empirecollectables.com. Devlan
looks back on the ‘Retaliatory Rate Period’ in his
popular Victorian stamps column, on page 40.
Stamp shop proprietor Tim Clegg, of the Torbay
Stamp Centre, has recently published a book on his
thoughts on stamps and collecting entitled
Stamp
Collecting Unhinged.
He discusses the trend of
