Fonts of Wisdom
wo matters
spring to mind
with this
editorial. The first is
the matter of font
size that has been
much on the minds
of the team here of
late. On the one
hand we want to fit
more into the
magazine – the pile
of unused material
mounts month on
month and we want
to run as much of it
as possible – but on
the other hand we
have to be mindful
of people s ability to read the printed pages.
Having been brought up reading magazines
and newspapers in a pre computer age most
of us here have become accustomed to
reading small print and do not regard it as an
issue. Large brightly lit print on a computer
screen has to some extent altered our
reading habits, just as the keyboard has
changed the way we write – my own spidery
handwriting has become an unreadable
mess after ten years of typing, but I am
pleased to say I can still become lost in a
book under virtually any conditions.
Latterly it seems to have been a trend
with some titles to try and transpose the
computer screen onto the printed page, with
big bright images and words big enough to
cater to a common denominator. We are not
going to do that. However, in a spirit of
compromise, and acknowledging that times
have changed I have asked the design team
not to run text at less than an eight point
font. That is common to average in books,
and should I hope allow our erudite and
fascinating authors to wax lyrical without
inducing anybody to squint.
Talking of which, this month the team
have assembled a fine selection of articles
with a heavy bias towards classic British
types and I am pleased to welcome Mr Tony
Grand aboard with his piece on the Fairey
Delta III. Tony and I have worked together in
the past and I regard his particular brand of
scratch building, research, and educated
guesses as very much at the heart of what
this magazine stands for.
So I hope you find the balance right this
month. Big images of beautiful models are
fine in their place, but without intelligent and
informative text they are really only
pictures.

C-54/DC-4 – an advanced preview

he Douglas C-54/DC-4 Skymaster was
a four engined transport aircraft used
by the United States Armed forces
during the World War II and beyond until it
was retired in 1975. The C-54 was a
modified version of the Civilian DC-4 and
was used in numerous roles throughout its
career and was heavily involved in the
Berlin Airlift during the Soviet Blockade.
The C-54 had a crew of four and could
carry up to fifty troops, depending on the
load configuration, and was powered by
four Pratt and Whitney R-2000-9 radial
engines with a range of 4,000 miles. 1,170
were built between 1942 and1947 and the
primary operators were the USAAF, US
Navy and the USAF.
This is a brand new release from Revell
of a type long awaited in this scale, and
consists of around 300 grey plastic and
twenty two clear plastic parts, one decal
sheet and one instruction booklet. I would
have to say it is quite a comprehensive kit.
The sprues supplied are test shots in a
hard dark grey plastic, with very finely
engraved panel lines and excellent
detailing to the engines, interior parts and
undercarriage. The decals are of course
nicely printed with options for two aircraft,
but the instructions supplied were very
basic as it is a test shot with neither paint
references nor decal placement guide. The
T
proper ones will no doubt be up to Revell’s
normal high standard.
I’ve been looking forward to this one.
Construction
The build begins by assembling the
forward landing gear side walls to the
cockpit floor. The main instrument panel
has a decal for the instruments and looks
the part when finished as it has raised dials
over which the decal settles well. The
centre console also has raised detailing
that responds well to careful painting.
These two parts were then added to the
cockpit floor along with the cockpit
bulkhead. The pilot and copilot’s seats
were assembled, painted and glued into
position along with the control columns,
and the main cabin floor was now fitted.
Although it is a large part the location pegs
are quite sturdy and the fit is very strong.
Next up was the rear cockpit bulkhead
to which the radio receiver and other
equipment is fitted. There is no lack of
detail in these parts and they look superb
when painted and installed. Revell have
not missed much here, and it really is
worthwhile taking time on this section as it
can be seen through the cabin door if it is
modelled in the open position. The radio
room rear bulkhead was then fitted along
Cockpit and radio compartment painted and assembled
Nose bulkhead detail – there are few areas of the kit that have
been left to chance

Fuselage almost complete. Although filler was needed along the
joints I suspect that the production kit will not require as much,
as this test shot was cast in a harder plastic

to expect from the world’s leading
modelling company.
The fully finished interior with cabin side walls added
with the crew rest cabin bulkhead and
door. The crew bunks were installed along
with what I guess must be the toilet
compartment. The cabin seats were
sprayed matt red whilst still on their sprues,
given a dark wash, then dry brushed,
assembled and fitted to the cabin floor. The
last interior parts to fit were the rear cabin
bulkhead and the cabin interior side walls,
and the impressively detailed interior was
complete.
There are clear parts supplied for all of
the cabin windows but there are a lot of
them and masking is not my favourite part
of this hobby so I left them off, preferring to
use Micro Krystal Klear later on.
The two fuselage halves can now be
joined together but before you do I would
suggest that you fit part number (and it
may change) 068, which is the main cabin
door, as it is not possible to fit without
modifying it after the fuselage halves are
joined together.
There are two different nose cones
supplied, one for a radar equipped aircraft
and one without. I chose the former. The
cockpit glazing was now masked and
fitted, and there is an optional roof light
just aft of the cockpit, which if fitted
requires the hole in the fuselage to be
opened up as it is visible from the inside.
Two different tail cones are supplied. I
opted for the long version and added this,
along with the rudder, at this point in the
build.
The wings were next up. If you want to
model the aircraft with the flaps down then
you have to cut away the sections on the
lower wing before assembly, which of
course I did. Construction of the engine
cowls and main wheel bays now
commenced, and these are quite
complicated but it all makes perfect sense
once the wings and engines are fully
assembled - you do need a decent pair of
tweezers though.
There is plenty of detail to the inner
surfaces of the wheel wells and the
location of the parts is very positive. With
the engine bulkheads, intakes and wheel
well assembly done the upper wing
sections can be joined to the lower. I did
