Issue
t’s been an interesting few months for the beer industry with mergers
and acquisitions dominating much of the conversation. For many in the
industry, the announcement that Asahi had taken a 100 per cent ownership
stake in Mountain Goat came as little surprise – with Mountain Goat
contract partners with Asahi for three years, rumours of an acquisition
have been around for some time. Still, many craft purists will react with
dismay at the news that one of the standard bearers for the craft beer sector here has
been snapped up by a brewing behemoth. However, it is probably a sign of things to
come with Australia’s craft beer industry enjoying strong growth, albeit off a small
base, and overall beer consumption at a 68-year low, it was only a matter of time
before the large brewers tried to snap up a slice of the craft market.
While it is sad to see an iconic Australian craft brewery sold to a foreign-owned
company, congratulations must be extended to Mountain Goat’s Dave Bonighton
and Cam Hines who have done an amazing job with the brewery. They started
brewing at a time when craft wasn’t ‘cool’ or popular with hipsters and getting your
beers poured on tap at venues was nearly impossible. The craft beer scene today is
a completely different landscape and we have people like Bonighton and Hines to
thank for that.
To end the year we have a massive edition to keep you entertained over the
summer months. With nine out of every 10 beers consumed in Australia being lagers,
Jeremy Sambrooks investigates the style and discovers some craft brewers dedicated
to the art of lager brewing (pg18).
Summer is prime barbecuing season so, with that in mind, we look at two of life’s
greatest pleasures – meat and beer (pg46). Cider is a popular thirst-quencher as the
mercury rises, so we profile 20 ciders to
slurp over summer (pg52).
We have also put together the ultimate
