What then
are
we expecting of the match?
What
forecasts
can
we
make?
World Champion
Anand
was
on show
in
Wijk
aan Zee:
a
lot
of
draws,
no
losses,
a
good
victory
over
Kramnik
and
a
fortunate
one against Shirov.
On
the
DVD
you
can
hear the
World
Champion com-
menting
on his
brilliant
game against
Kramnik.
For
Topalov,
Linares
was
even closer
to
the
start of the
WCh,
but
in
2008
Anand
appeared
in
Bilbao
and
convincingly
defeated
Kramnik
only four
weeks
later.
In
Linares the
Bulgarian
played
just
as
we
are
accustomed
to
seeing
him
do
-
briskly
and actively, and
above
all
always
seeking the
initiative in
bad
positions
even
when
it
cost
him
(more) material. His oppo-
nents
frequently
got
into
time trouble
and
then
went down.
But
it
is
doubtful
whether this
style
will
work
against the
World
Champion,
because
Anand
and
time trouble
do
not
often appear
in
the
same sentence.
On balance, the
Bulgarian
has
a
slight
advan-
tage:
just like Anand
he
won
7
games
with
White, but
with
Black
he
took
the
full point
favourite
should
things
come
down to
tiebreak
after
6:6.
a
clear
a
It
is
easier
to
forecast the move
which
both
protagonists
will
choose
to
open
with.
Topalov
will
probably most
often
employ
1.d4, because
there
is
a
host
ofvariations
which
can be
tried
out
against Anand's
Queent Indian, which
al-
lows
him
great
potential for innovations
and
improvements.
In
previous
games
against Topalov
at
classical
thinking
time Anand
has
always opened
with
l.e4
and
that
will
certainly
also be
his cholce
in
Sofia;
this
is because
there
is
little
fear
that
Topalov
will
play the
Petroffand
in
addition
that opening
has
been
sufering
a
bit oflate
-
see
also
Marint
opening
survey
for
Wijk
aan
Zee. Since
it
is
hard to
say
what
openings
for
Black Topalov
will
bring to
the match,
Anand
should be on the
safe side
with
his usual move
1.e4.
What
will
be
much more exciting
is
what
the
participants
will
bring
out
in
the way
of
open-
ings
for
Black. The surprise
factor
is
an
impor-
tant
one and
for that
reason
we can
count on
seeing
a
few
unexpected openings.
So
far we
have
not
heard
much
about
who the
seconds
will
be,
but very probably Anand
will
be
working
four times
compared
to
Anand's three. The
dif-
ference is
so
minimal,
that not much
can be
in-
ferred
from
it;
after all, such prognoses have al-
ways
turned
out
to
be
as
precise
as
reading
the
tea leaves, even
when
the difference between
players
was clearer.
In
any
case
Anandt
superi-
ority in
rapid
chess is so
great
that
he
would
be
with
his
2008
team: Kasimdzhanov,
P.H.
Nielsen
and Wojtaszek. We
have so
far
heard
nothing from
Topalov.

It
is
really
astonishing
how quickly
the
extraor-
dinary
becomes regarded
as
normal.
After
Magnus Carlsent
drum
ro11
in
Nanjing
in
the
summer
of
last
year and the
victory in
London
the
Norwegian
has
now
aiso
won
the
Corus
Tournament in
Wijk
aanZee
in
the
Nether-
lands. This new
triumph
of
the
19
year
old
certainly
came
as
no great surprise
to
anyone.
What
is
extraordinary
is
how the
Carlsen
phe-
nomenon now
seems
almost
normal.
The
Corus
Tournament
could
have
had one
of
many
different
players
as
this
year's
vlctor
since
it
was
very
turbulent
one
this
time.
At
the
start, Shirov
seemed
to want to play everyone
off the
board
and got
himself
a
dream start
with
five
wins
in
a
row. But
in
the
second
half
of the
tournament
Lady Luck
was
not
on his
side,
e.g.
against
Anand,
since
in that
game
he
went
astray
on move
40
in
a
winning position.
Anand,
for
his
part, dld not
demonstrate the
right amount
ofvigour
in
the
lirst
halfofthe
event
and per-
haps
ifhad
done
so
he
might
have
achieved
more than
fourth place.
Nevertheless,
in
the
a
prestige duel
in
the
last
round but
one he
man-
aged an
impressive
vlctory
over
Kramnik,
and
the
world
champion
has
spoken about
it for
us
on the
DVD in
audio
format. Up
until
this
de-
feat,
Kramnik
had
been
doing
brilliantly
and was
well in
the
running.
So
at
the end Carlsen
prof-
ited
from
a
weakening of the
other front
runners
and
in
a
spurt
took
over
the
lead
with victories
over Dominguez-Perez and
Karjakin in
rounds
10
and
1
I
and
he
did not relinquish
it
after that.
