Wijk aan Zee
has begun! Both the A and the B group are
very exciting with a lot of surprises, especially in the A group.
Let us take a look at the situation a er rounds:
Who would have guessed that Wojtaszek would beat Carlsen
and Caruana in a very convincing way, or that Ivanchuk would
lead the tournament with a fantastic / . The play of Wesley
So and Ding Liren is also both good and stable. The young
Chinese players have been doing very well recently, even in
the best European tournaments.
These are the good surprises, now let us take a look at the
upsets:
Jobava has as usual been playing very attractive chess, but
he’s on a catastrophic score of . / !
The same goes to Aronian, who is probably having one of his
worst ever performances with . / . We should not forget that
Aronian has already won Wijk aan Zee times!
Caruana, who started to well, had a tough time losing to
Wojtaszek on Thursday.
Saric, Hou Yifan and Van Wely are also all having very hard
times, but this was more expected, as it is not easy to play
against players who are more than
points higher rated
than you.
In the B group things are also very mixed up, but the favorites
are still leading: Navara, Wei Yi (who is only -years old but
already has an ELO of
) and the Dutchman Erwin l’Ami are

A huge surprise was the loss of Jan Timman to Anne Haast.

preparation, but some "invisible" mistakes of his strong
Chinese rival allowed him to nicely turn the game to his favor.

line where White tries to hold the tension in the center. The
main move is .cxd . This temporarily weakens the long
diagonal and Caruana directly makes use of it.

This seems to me to be a more accurate response than

This is a very natural move, but it is wrong. It further
pushes back the black pieces, opens the diagonal of the g
bishop, closes the one on g , but somehow it turns out to be a
huge weakening of the pawn structure and this becomes the
most important positional factor. It is very hard to understand
and evaluate the plusses and minuses at first sight, but a
few moves later it all becomes clear. [The right move was
.Rb ! creating a highly unpleasant pin on the b-file with
which it is not easy to deal at all... ...Qa (On
