EDITORIAL
Dear readers,
for kibitzers the world over, it was once more
like being in paradise: at the same time there
were the super-tournament in Shamkir (Az-
erbaijan) in honour of Vugar Gashimov and
the world team championships in Tsaghkadzor
(Armenia). Add to that the live commentary
on playchess.com by Daniel King, Simon Wil-
liams and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Almost all of
the very top players were in the starting blocks
and from a geographical point of view they
were not so very far apart. Of course this also
represented, as it were, a repositioning of the
top ten.
Magnus Carlsen can above all enjoy the taste
of victory, he is even firmer in the saddle than
before. If at the end of last year it appeared that
the gap between the Norwegian and the rest of
the world was narrowing, we are now obliged
to take note of the opposite. With his 2876 Elo
points the world champion is approaching pre-
vious highs, his lead in the world ranking list is
a whopping 72 points.
But there is another winner: Vishwanathan
Anand. The former world champion has once
again crossed the 2800 Elo barrier and has tak-
en over 2nd place in the list. By doing so he also
confirms retrospectively that he was the correct
challenger for Carlsen.
In Shamkir Anand was convincing not only
because of his three clean wins and the clear
second place, but he was also the only one who
brought the world champion to the edge of de-
feat. Here is their position after 42...¢g8:
One feels that White has a winning position. But
in order to secure victory, he has to give up two
things: there is no way the knight can avoid leav-
ing its lovely position on f5 and probably things
will also not work out unless he surrenders
the b2-pawn. Even then it is not clear whether
White can win. With performances like those
in Shamkir it does not at all appear impossible
that the 45 year old Anand will once again be the
challenger of Magnus Carlsen in 2016.
And the triumph of the Chinese team was an-
other impressive event. In view of their average
age we can presume that this will not prove to
be their last success. Until recently Ding Liren,
22, and Yu Yangyi, 20 were considered to be
the Chinese super-talents, but it now seems
that Wei Yi will surpass them. On the DVD
there are five games provided with notes by the
just 15 year old player who, with his 7 out of 9,
scored the best result in this WCh.

Shamkir:
At the Gashimov Memorial Magnus
Carlsen once more underlined his unique class:
7 out of 9 without a defeat confirmed his rank-
ing as the clear No. 1 in the world. Vishy Anand
can also be satisfied – with 6 out of 9 he advanced
to second place on the ranking list. The Indian
has annotated a game for you, just as Fabiano
Caruana and Wesley So have provided comments
on games. In addition you can find on the DVD
all nine daily summaries by Daniel King. Other
annotations have been contributed by Ftacnik,
Gormally, Havasi, Krasenkow, Mokal, Pavlovic,
Roiz, Stohl and Sumets.
Team WCh:
China impressively triumphed in its
duel with the Ukraine and with its young team it
won its second major title in succession. You will
find on the DVD annotations by Ftacnik, Illing-
worth, Krasenkow, Marin, Mokal, Pavlovic, Roiz,
Stohl, Sumets and Szabo. Fully five games by the
15 year old Wei Yi (7 out of 9!) were found worthy
of being analysed.
European Championship:
Evgenij Najer is the
surprise European champion. Players who took
part, Mateusz Bartel (3rd place), Alexander Ipa-
tov, Viktor Laznicka, David Navara (2nd place),
Evgeny Postny and Andrey Volokitin have anno-
tated games of their own. Mihail Marin has once
more put together a major opening survey. Daniel
King contributes a video with a game by the new
European champion. With further annotations
by Krasenkow, Meulders, Mikhalchishin, Mokal,
Roiz and Szabo.
Other tournaments:
In the
US championship
Hikaru Nakamura again collected the title. Four
games are annotated on the DVD (by Gormally
and Stohl). The
Women’s WCh
ended with the
surprising triumph of Mariya Muzychuk. 10
games have been provided with comments, with
the new title holder analysing her decisive game
against Natalija Pogonina in the final. Other
players have annotated their games from various
events, including Adhiban, Edouard, Gupta and
Kasimdzhanov.

Oliver Reeh’s article contains 29 games studded
with numerous training questions and an intro-

Müller: Endgames – “Endgames from the
Benko Gambit”
Karsten Müller’s column contains two introducto-
ry texts, 19 annotated endgames (the subject is the
Benko Gambit), many training questions and five

Rogozenco: Strategy – “Converting a
material advantage”
This time Dorian Rogozenco deals with the con-

A first at the team WCh Tsaghkadzor in Arme-
nia: for the first time in the history of chess a
Chinese team was victorious in the tournament
of the ten best nations in the world. However,
the triumph of Ding Liren, Yu Yanghi, Bu Xi-
angzhi and Wei Yi was hardly a great surprise.
It was only nine months ago that China took its
first gold medal in the chess Olympiad.
However, at the start the excitement was pro-
vided by another team: Cuba defeated the hosts
Armenia and also Russia; two of the top favour-
ites. Previously the Russians had lost to Ukraine
and had to abandon all ambitions for the title
at this early stage. After six rounds China and
the Ukraine led the table with an equal number

the Chinese team in the final round. But India
was also defeated by the same score and China
was the clear winner and, as they had been in
2014 in Tromsö, were the undefeated gold med-
allists.
