Does Microsoft know I’m writing this? I’m
using Word on a Windows 10 PC, so it’s a
question I’m tempted to ask. You may ask
yourself something similar after reading this
issue’s cover feature (page 50), in which we
reveal how Microsoft’s new operating system
spies on your every move. It doesn’t just know
the obvious stuff - your name, age and so on. It
also tracks what you type, targets you with
adverts and uploads info from your calendar.
And why is Microsoft doing this? I’ll give you
a clue: it’s one word, five letters long, begins
with M, ends in Y, and rhymes with ‘funny’.
Given recent cover features, it may seem as if
we have it in for Windows 10. That’s not true.
We still think it’s a very good operating system
that provides a richer computing experience
than its rivals. It’s precisely
because
we’re such
big Windows fans that we feel the need to
highlight where Microsoft gets it wrong.

We use snipcas to turn long URLs that
are hard to type into ones that are
short and simple. They aren’t websites
themselves, which means they won’t
be recognised if you type them into
Google. Instead, you need to type them
into your browser address bar, then
press Enter. Doing this will take you to
the correct website.
