we present a special focus on the Victoria Cross, arguably the
most famous medal in the world. In this I wanted to tell the
medal’s story, and my sincere thanks go to Hancock’s of London for
supplying the information to do this. Hancock’s have been making the
VC since it was introduced in 1856, and the medal shown on the cover
of this issue is one of the company’s replicas. It is displayed on some of
the medal ribbons of conflicts in which the VC has been awarded, from
the Crimean War at the top to Afghanistan at the bottom, which I hope
offers a new idea of how to highlight the medal’s 160 year history. I also
wanted to show readers some other unusual pictures relating to the VC,
and I hope you enjoy looking at the photos of the actual medal which
was approved by Queen Victoria and also of the little-seen cannon metal
used to produce the genuine medals.
Auctioneers Morton and Eden recently sold the latest Victoria Cross
to be offered for sale, which was in extremely fine condition and realised
£88,000 in late June. This was the Indian Mutiny “Secundra Bagh”
VC awarded to Private John Smith, 1st Battalion Madras (European)
Fusiliers, which was awarded for his gallant conduct in action as one
of the first soldiers to enter the fray inside the Secundra Bagh on 16
November 1857. This, I felt, was important to include in this issue as it is
a rare occurrence for a VC to be put up for public sale, and it also brings
the medal’s story right up-to-date.
